This report documents, analyzes, and reflects on the development of specialized competencies in caring for the person in a perioperative situation, within the scope of the Master’s Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing at the Escola Superior de Saúde Santa Maria, in consortium with the Escola Superior de Enfermagem São José de Cluny, with a particular focus on caring for the person undergoing bariatric surgery. This educational path was grounded in supervised clinical practice carried out in three clinical training contexts (operating rooms and ambulatory surgery units), which enabled the consolidation of both common and specific nursing competencies. Methodologically, the process was based on observation, critical reflection, and analysis of real clinical situations, triangulated with scientific literature and professional regulatory frameworks. This approach supported the development of surgical consciousness as an essential competency for clinical decision-making, perioperative risk management, effective communication, and the humanization of care. The results demonstrate the acquisition of advanced skills in the perioperative area, particularly in perioperative risk management, safe clinical communication, standardization of processes that enhance surgical safety, empowerment of the person and family, and the promotion of continuity of care. The contribution of the specialist nurse in adapting interventions to the needs of the person with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery is also highlighted, underscoring their central role in care delivery. It is concluded that this training process has significantly contributed to strengthening professional identity and promoting the continuous improvement of quality and safety in the care provided to the person undergoing bariatric surgery and their family/significant others, grounded in ethical and legal principles and supported by up-to-date scientific evidence.
