Abstract(s)
The increase of cultural diversity in Portugal has several implications and points to the need for the implementation of public policies to integrate those who arrive and those who already live here, since those who arrive bring differences in ways of life, values, expectations and often in language. In this pressing challenge of integrating migrant citizens from different origins, the Public Security Police (PSP) also plays a fundamental role. The "Together for All" programme aims to improve the response given by the PSP to the phenomenon of migration. It is operationalised in different ways, from the training component, to the different awareness raising actions and the "Choices Program" projects. These projects are forms of interaction and coexistence between police and young people. In the course of the scientific work, an empirical qualitative study was conducted, using the interview technique, to gather contributions from 8 participants on their perceptions of the work done in the "Choices Programmes" projects and the contribution of proximity policing to the issue of migrations, carrying out a thematic content analysis. The results obtained allow us to conclude that these projects are imperative, as they allow us to prevent many events, empower young people at the educational and social level and accompany them, giving them good examples and good mentoring in order to keep them away from a life surrounded by illicit activities. Furthermore, we conclude that cultural competence training is crucial for the performance of police functions in contemporary society.
