Abstract(s)
This report documents the professional internship undertaken as part of the Master’s Degree in Social Intervention in Childhood and Youth at Risk of Social Exclusion, carried out at an educational centre in the north of the country between November 2023 and July 2024. The internship focused on the intervention with young people serving a custodial educational measure, with the aim of identifying the factors that led to their institutional placement, as well as the challenges associated with social reintegration. The research aimed to understand the events that contributed to the first custodial measure in the educational centre and the reasons behind subsequent placements. Social, economic, family, educational, and psychological factors were analysed, using a methodology that combined participant observation with document analysis. The professional practice provided direct contact with the youth and enabled a critical analysis of the role of the social worker in an institutional setting. The results highlight the need for more individualised intervention strategies, stronger post-institutional follow-up, and greater coordination with families and communities. The internship contributed to the development of technical and reflective skills, reinforcing the importance of a multidisciplinary, youth-centred approach in addressing the issues of juvenile delinquency and social exclusion.
