Abstract(s)
A crescente assertividade chinesa na sua expansão no Mar do Sul da China, com a construção e militarização de ilhas artificiais e o crescente domínio deste corpo de água, a par da sua aposta no aperfeiçoamento e reforço das capacidades do Exército Popular de Libertação, ameaça o status quo de equilíbrio geoestratégico da região em detrimento da atual potência hegemónica, os Estados Unidos da América.
O objeto de estudo deste trabalho é a crescente afirmação do poder militar da China no Mar do Sul da China e as consequências para o equilíbrio geoestratégico na região.
Para o efeito adotou-se um raciocínio dedutivo, com uma abordagem qualitativa e um desenho de pesquisa de estudo de caso. Cumulativamente à análise documental, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas a entidades de referência na matéria.
Como resultado deste estudo conclui-se que os ganhos geoestratégicos alcançados pela China, naquela região, mercê da sua assertividade expansionista e reforço de capacidades, não obstante as ações de contenção encetadas e programadas pelos EUA, dificilmente serão reversíveis, observando-se que se caminha para uma reconfiguração do equilíbrio de poderes naquela região do globo, que determinará um novo tipo de relacionamento entre as duas maiores potências mundiais
China´s increasing expansion assertiveness in the South China Sea, with the construction and militarization of artificial islands and progressive control of this body of water, alongside its efforts in perfecting and reinforcing the capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army, threatens the region’s geostrategic balance status quo, in detriment of the current hegemonic power, the United States of America. The object of study of this paper is the growing affirmation of China’s military power in the South China Sea and the consequences for the geostrategic balance in the region. To achieve this goal, deductive reasoning was adopted, with a qualitative approach and a case study research design. In addition to document analysis, semi-structured interviews were conducted to academics of renowned competence on the subject. As a result of this study, it is concluded that the geostrategic gains achieved by China, in the region, thanks to its expansion assertiveness and reinforcement of capabilities, are hardly reversible, regardless of the containment actions undertaken and programed by the United States. Thus, the path is being set for a reconfiguration of the balance of power in that region, one that will determine a new type of relationship between the two greatest powers in the world.
