Abstract(s)
Professionals working in residential care homes for children and young people at risk deal with stressful and emotionally draining situations on a daily basis, due to the highly demanding nature of their work. These factors often lead to exhaustion and energy depletion, exacerbated by a lack of resources, demanding schedules, and insufficient staff numbers, all of which contribute to burnout. The objective of this study was to understand the work factors that can contribute to the development of burnout and to identify the emotional impacts associated with the work context, as well as the feelings of the Educational Teams (ET) and Support Team (ST) regarding the experiences of children and young people, marked by traumatic experiences, and the perception of the demands and challenges inherent to the job. The research was based on a qualitative methodology, supported by eleven semi-structured interviews conducted with EE and EA professionals who, as an inclusion criterion, had to be working in a Residential Care Home for Children and Young People in the northern region of Portugal. The testimonies collected and organized into categories show the daily lives of these professionals, their routines, the challenges they face, and the emotional impact that all this has on them, highlighting their vulnerability to the development of burnout. The results were obtained through contextual content analysis of the interviews. The data presentation is organized into categories, with each group accompanied by its respective analysis and discussion, supported by existing literature. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
