Abstract(s)
Being aware of the disproportionate effects of an armed conflict on women and children and the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, the role of women has emerged as a relevant actor in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, making the inclusion of a gender perspective a priority in peace-building efforts. Portugal has joined this commitment and the challenge of increasing the number of female military personnel participating in international peacekeeping missions. However, and considering that the participation of the portuguese female military is still reduced, it is important to study what factors may be influencing this fact, in order to seek strategies that promote greater integration and female contribution to the missions. To this end, this study was based on an inductive methodology and on a mixed-type research strategy, supported by a questionnaire to the universe of the Air Force, to wich 440 military personnel responded, and seven interviews to identify improvement measures to be implemented. These tools led to the conclusion that there is a general acceptance of female participation and that inclusive measures have already been adopted, noting that the greatest limitation to female participation is related to personal and family-related reasons, anticipating that the solution could be that of providing greater social support for the families of the deployed female/male military personnel.
