Abstract(s)
In recent decades, the development of civil construction has made great advances, based on new means of investigation and new materials and technologies associated with them. On the other hand, the reinforcement and repair activities have been increasing due to the aging and degradation of existing structures, which has consequently given rise to the appearance of new materials, such as fiber-reinforced polymer composites, and structural repair and reinforcement technologies. The use of these new materials in construction requires new techniques and more studies on their actual behavior, both in terms of mechanical characteristics and in terms of durability. In this dissertation, it is intended to present the potentials and limitations of fiber-reinforced polymer composites, FRP, used as rehabilitation/reinforcement material and application in new constructions. It begins by describing the development of composite materials, in other areas up to their use in civil construction, showing their properties, production processes, applications in rehabilitation and new construction, case studies and ongoing investigations. Finally, some constraints and limitations of current reinforcement solutions are presented.
