The transition to higher education represents a period of change with significant impacts on university students’ mental health. This phase is often accompanied by several adjustments and is associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. Self-esteem stands out as a protective factor, positively influencing mental health and the way individuals cope with challenges. At the same time, sexuality plays an essential role in emotional well-being, being experienced in a unique way and influenced by several biopsychosocial factors. The present study adopted a quantitative, cross-sectional, and correlational design, with the main objective of analysing the relationships between self-esteem, sexual satisfaction, sexual pleasure, and mental health indicators, namely depression, anxiety, and stress, among higher education students in Portugal. The results revealed significant negative associations between self-esteem, sexual satisfaction, sexual pleasure, and mental health indicators, suggesting that higher levels of these variables are associated with lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Self-esteem emerged as the main predictor of mental health, showing significant negative associations with depression, anxiety, and stress. The findings reinforce the importance of understanding university students’ mental health from an integrated perspective, considering both intrapsychic and relational factors. This study contributes to a better understanding of the relationships between self-esteem, sexual satisfaction, sexual pleasure, and mental health among higher education students in Portugal.
