A sociedade mediática trouxe consigo novas oportunidades, mas também novos estímulos que desafiam o ser humano e a sua capacidade de distanciamento e racionalidade face ao universo virtual. As redes sociais tornaram-se o novo espaço público, onde todos podem participar livremente. Porém, essa liberdade não passa de uma utopia contemporânea. Não é neste espaço público que a democracia se extingue, mas é neste espaço público que se abre caminho a um role de possibilidades capazes de enfraquecê-la, como as fake news. Fake é o termo que mais se adequa aos efeitos práticos do fenómeno, pois na maioria das vezes a questão não se prende com a ideia de informação errada, mas sim de informação contextualmente distorcida. A premissa mais frequente e que suscita grande interesse pelo debate é a ideia de que se uma notícia é falsa então não é notícia e, por esse motivo, o termo fake news pode ser considerado paradoxal. Neste sentido procuramos perceber de que forma a prática jornalística influi na sociedade democrática e de que modo as agências noticiosas podem desempenhar um papel ativo no combate à desinformação, partindo do exemplo da Agência Lusa, que promoveu um debate sobre o tema em fevereiro de 2019.
Media society has brought with it new opportunities, but also new stimuli that challenge the human being and his capacity for distance and rationality in relation to the virtual universe. Social networks have become the new public space where everyone can participate freely. But this freedom is just a contemporary utopia. It is not in this public space that democracy is extinguished, but it is in this public space that a pathway of possibilities is likely to weaken it, such as fake news. Fake is the term that best fits the practical effects of the phenomenon, because most of the time the issue is not about the idea of wrong information but rather contextually distorted information. The most frequent premise that arouses great interest in the debate is the idea that if a news story is false then it is not news and, for this reason, the term fake news can be considered paradoxical. In this sense we seek to understand how journalistic practice influences democratic society and how news agencies can play an active role in combating disinformation, based on the example of Agência Lusa, which promoted a debate on the subject in February 2019.
