Current business models (linear economies) are not sustainable, as the ecological footprint generated has been substantial. This problem involves a joint response by governments, companies, and civil society, which may involve the introduction of circular economy business models as well as new technologies, particularly in a sector such as wine. This dissertation is based on the question: “Are companies in the wine sector, in the district of Setúbal, adopting circular economy policies?”, having as specific objectives: (1) to verify the existence of circular economy policies in these companies; (2) to understand the motivations that lead those responsible in top management to adopt or not these policies/strategies (their perception of the advantages for the company and the difficulties) and (3) to analyse what higher education institutions, and in the specific case, the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal, can do to help companies overcome these difficulties and obstacles. Thus, we sought to investigate what circular economy projects/strategies wine companies have or are implementing as well as their commitment to sustainable practices, investigate the barriers to introducing circular economy business models, and how higher education institutions can assist companies with the transition. In terms of research methods, a semi-structured interview was used in a qualitative approach based on case studies. The results obtained point to the non-existence of circular economic models even on a small scale, also verifying that top management is not available to make the transition. Even so, they have methods and equipment on the assumption of maximum efficiency, even though only aiming the economic component.
