Abstract(s)
Vila do Conde, do Comando Metropolitano do Porto.

This study aimed to investigate the level of emotional intelligence of police officers and its impact on the development of police activity. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 140 police officers of the Vila do Conde Police Division of the Metropolitan Command of Porto. Most of the respondents consider that they have good levels of emotional intelligence to deal with the difficulties inherent to police work. Among the four dimensions of emotional intelligence analyzed, the assessment of one's own emotions and the use of emotions to facilitate performance are the most developed by the police officers, while the assessment of emotions in others, and the regulation of one's own emotions emerge as the ones that need improvement. No positive associations were observed between length of service and the functions performed by the policemen in the increase of emotional intelligence. This conclusion can be extended to the remaining sociodemographic variables.
