diferentes aspetos do desenvolvimento global, incluindo o comportamento emocional e
A exploração
aprendizagens significativas e sustentando futuras aquisições motoras e cognitivas.
contextos educativos.
This study aimed to examine the influence of sensory activities on the motor and cognitive development of one-year-old children in a daycare setting. The research sought to understand how these activities contributed to different aspects of overall development, including emotional and social behavior, as well as educators' perceptions of their importance. To this end, the effects of sensory experiences on children's motor skills, cognition, and emotional responses were analyzed. Through a mixed-methods approach that combined observation and analysis of pedagogical practices, along with the application of a questionnaire survey to educators, this study aimed to highlight the fundamental role of sensory activities in the first year of life, reinforcing the need for intentionality in their implementation. The results showed that sensory play is essential for the motor, cognitive, and emotional development of one-year-old children. Sensory exploration contributes to motor coordination, balance, fine motor skills, and autonomy, while also promoting curiosity, problem-solving, and active learning. When sensory activities were applied, it was observed that sensory exploration evokes feelings of pleasure, surprise, and concentration, often accompanied by expressions of enthusiasm and motivation. On the other hand, when questioned, educators stated that sensory activities are important in emotional and social areas, as they help support children in managing their emotions, interacting with peers, and building autonomy. Some educators justified this priority by emphasizing the growing need to help children cope with frustrations and develop essential skills for harmonious social interactions. The research also highlights educators' perceptions regarding the implementation of these practices, revealing that, despite the widespread recognition of their importance, a significant percentage of professionals lack ongoing training in sensory stimulation. Thus, the study reinforces the need to invest in educator training, ensuring enriching environments and experiences tailored to the individual needs of children. Despite the acknowledgment of the relevance of sensory activities, the study identified challenges in their implementation, such as the lack of time and appropriate institutional resources, which compromise the frequency and quality of the sensory experiencesv provided. Therefore, greater investment in the availability of materials and continuous training for educators is essential to ensure the quality and effectiveness of these practices. This study concludes that sensory activities are a fundamental pillar for the overall development of children in their first year of life, providing meaningful learning experiences and supporting future motor and cognitive skills. Despite the contributions of this research, there is a recognized need for future studies that analyze the long-term influence of sensory activities in different educational contexts.
