This report aims to present the learning pathway developed during the Operating Theatre placement, outlining the objectives established and the activities undertaken for the acquisition and development of specialised competencies within the scope of the Master’s degree in Nursing. It also seeks to reflect a critical, reflective, and evidence-based practice, reinforcing the contribution of the specialist nurse as a promoter of quality, safety, and continuous improvement in perioperative care. The Operating Theatre is a complex and high-risk environment where healthcare professionals are exposed to various factors that may compromise their health and safety, namely formaldehyde, a substance with carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic properties. In this context, the prevention of occupational exposure to formaldehyde was identified as a focus of intervention, highlighting the role of the specialist nurse in promoting safe environments and implementing evidence-based practices. Therefore, a Scoping Review was conducted, which enabled the identification of essential nursing interventions for mitigating this risk. The analysed evidence demonstrates the decisive role of nurses in implementing chemical safety measures, including the use of closed-system devices, the organisation of preventive procedures, continuous team training, and the monitoring of compliance with safety protocols. The main nursing interventions identified include: the promotion of continuous educational strategies; the development of safe environments and technologies; environmental monitoring and health surveillance; leadership in strengthening a culture of safety; and the promotion of effective organisational management. The theoretical framework of this report is based on Imogene King’s Theory of Goal Attainment, which emphasises the importance of interactions between professionals and organisations in promoting safe environments and achieving shared health and safety goals.
