Abstract(s)
equitação adequadas e do desenvolvimento muscular correto.
tema.
“Kissing Spines” is a common cause of back pain, particularly in sport horses. This disease is a skeletal abnormality characterized by the contact between the dorsal spinous processes. The etiology is multifactorial and not yet fully understood. Horses with back pain exhibit a variety of clinical signs, including lameness, biomechanical changes, behavioural alterations, decreased flexibility, and reduced performance. Diagnosis is often made through radiography, looking for changes in the contour of the dorsal spinous processes. Additionally, complementary methods such as scintigraphy and thermography may be advantageous. The decision between medical or surgical treatment depends on the degree of bone changes, the severity of pain, and the financial possibilities of the owner. Continuous physiotherapy and a targeted training plan for muscle strengthening are essential. It is important to note that this condition does not always cause pain, so careful clinical evaluation is necessary. Minimizing the clinical signs of this disease can be achieved through appropriate riding practices and proper muscle development. Although it is one of the most common musculoskeletal diseases in horses, scientific literature on this pathology is relatively scarce, making it difficult to implement optimized diagnostic and treatment strategies. Therefore, this work aims to conduct a literature review to compile and analyse the most current and relevant clinical information on the topic.
