Abstract(s)
Youth are one of the several social groups with whom the policemen from Polícia de Segurança Pública deal with in the fulfillment of their duty. From this relationship, evaluative perceptions of youth related to the police inevitably arise. For a better understanding of the subject under study, the construct of attitudes within the scope of Social Psychology was explored, to clarify the phenomena responsible for the formation of youth attitudes towards police. After verifying the isolated correlation of different variables with the general attitudes and perceptions of bias, a Structural Equation Model was created that integrated the variables of sex, subjective socioeconomic status of the family, belonging to a social minority group status, perceptions of the neighborhood context, contacts with police derived from previous victimization or delinquency, observation of police activity through the media, social networks or other people and the degree of satisfaction with direct (both voluntary and involuntary) and indirect interactions with police officers. The results obtained allow us to conclude that, considering the youth who interacted both directly and indirectly with the police, on the one hand, satisfaction with the indirect and direct contacts with police, are the variables that most influence general attitudes and perceptions of bias toward them and, on the other hand, that more positive general attitudes contribute to a greater willingness of youth to cooperate with police officers, while perceptions of bias do not.
