Each year, numerous surgeries are performed in Portugal. The set of phases encompassing the pre, intra and postoperative periods is referred to as the perioperative period, which is a particularly sensitive time for the individual, marked by vulnerability, anxiety, and increased risks. These factors may be intensified by low levels of health literacy, compromising well-being, surgical safety, and, consequently, health outcomes. In this context, it becomes essential to promote and develop health literacy in order to improve the safety and quality of care, actively involving the patient and their family and/or significant other. The Specialist Nurse plays a key role by developing, organizing, and implementing educational interventions that empower individuals, encouraging their participation throughout their surgical journey and promoting safer, more humanized, and pation-centered healthcare. Having identified this need, the master's student developed a research component in the form of a scoping review, which made it possible to map the available scientific evidence on nursing interventions aimed at promoting health literacy among individuals undergoing surgery, particularly in the preoperative period. At the same time, two clinical placements were carried out in a perioperative setting, where practice demonstrated the development of competencies, as well as the overcoming of personal and professional challenges. In summary, this report reflects a challenging and engaging journey, marked by the consolidation of specialized practice grounded in scientific evidence, aimed at the continuous improvement of the quality of nursing care and the promotion of professional excellence in the perioperative context.
