Privatization Process and Talent Management in Angola

The problem of the privatization process began in the 1940s, even though it only really began to gain a prominent place in the entrepreneurial path, about 50 years later. The processes of privatization of the world economies, which led to the triggering of a set of cooperative strategies based on the State-owned enterprises privatization, and, of course, all these events, had repercussions also in Angola. Based on an investigation of a pragmatic or inductive nature, based on a non-probabilistic sample, due to the lack of studies and information about the phenomenon of Angola’s privatization during the period from colonial independence to the present. This article aims to develop this subject by presenting, on the one hand, a set of causes that were the basis of the failure in the privatization processes taken place in Angola between 1989 and 2005 and which degenerated into the collapse of its corporate network. And, on the other hand, it presents an idea of the possible impact that these privatization processes failures had, and still have, on Talent Management by Angolan organizations. It also presents a set of suggestions which could be considered in future privatization processes that may occur by building a more consistent business structure in economic and business terms.
Combining Models in Discrete Discriminant Analysis

Hand tactile discrimination, social touch and frailty criteria in elderly people: A cross sectional observational study

Frailty is a common syndrome among elderly and sensory decline may exacerbate functional decline. The hand function, the manual dexterity, the performance of the daily living skills and the social interactions are determined, in a large degree, by sensory integrity. However, hand tactile sensory deterioration has been little explored in frailty. We performed a cross sectional observational study with 181 of institutionalized elders. From the initial sample we selected 50 subjects (68–99 years) who met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Our goals were (1) to analyse the relationship between tactile discrimination (TD) of the hand, avoidance behaviours and attitudes towards social touch (BATST) and phenotype frailty criteria (unintentional weight loss, self-perception of exhaustion, decrease grip strength GS, slow walking speed, low level of physical activity), (2) to explore whether other variables can contribute to explain the differences between pre-frail and frail elders. The results showed that increasing age is related to decline of TD of the hand (p = 0.021) and to decrease in GS (p = 0.025); women have significantly lower level of GS (p = 0.001); TD decrease is correlated with higher avoidance BATST (p = 0.000) and with lower GS (p = 0.000); Lower GS corresponds to more avoidance BATST (p = 0.003). Hand TD also can differentiate frail and pre-frail elderly subjects in this sample (p = 0.037). Decreased TD of the hand may have implications on the functionality and on interpersonal relationships. TD of the hand also explains frailty levels in this sample. Hand TD should be used in assessment and intervention protocols in pre-frail and frail elders.
Combining models in discrete discriminant analysis

Diverse Discrete Discriminant Analysis (DDA) models perform differently on different sample observations (Brito et al. (2006)). This fact has encouraged research in combined models for DDA. This research seems to be specially promising when the a priori classes are not well separated or when small or moderate sized samples are considered, which often occurs in practice. In this work we evaluate the performance of a linear combination of two DDA models (Marques et al. (2008)): the First-Order Independence Model (FOIM) and the Dependence Trees Model (DTM) (Celeux and Nakache (1994). The pro- posed methodology also uses a Hierarchical Coupling Model (HIERM) when addressing multiclass classification problems, decomposing the multiclass problems into several bi-class problems, using a binary tree structure (Sousa Ferreira (2000)). The analysis is based both on simulated and real datasets. Results include measures of precision regarding a training set, a test set and cross-validation. The R software is used for the algorithm's implementation.
Employer Branding: The Power of Attraction in the EB Group

Employer branding of companies, organisations, and firms have recently been in focus as an essential dimension in the process of recruitment facilitating the attraction and retention the best talents. The purpose of this study is to examine the power of attraction of the EB Group, as an employer brand, considering the perception that students who attend higher education have about it. A self-administered survey was collected from 100 university students in Portugal. The results show that the EB Group has a strong brand. Furthermore, it is also an organization recognized not only for the quality of its products, as well as for the concern for customers. This study also proposes some managerial implications for companies, CEO`s, human resources and marketing directors, and further research directions within this article
