  • Self-care competence of patients with an intestinal stoma in the preoperative fase

    Background: Patients undergoing intestinal stoma formation need to develop their stoma self-care competence. This competence should start being developed during the preoperative phase. Objective: To identify patients’ stoma self-care competence in the preoperative phase, particularly on the day before ostomy surgery. Methodology: Quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Non-probability sampling technique with 50 participants. Data were collected using the assessment form of the Self-Care Competence of the Person with an Intestinal Stoma (CAO-EI: ESEP). Results: The level of knowledge represents the self-care competence of patients with an intestinal stoma in the preoperative phase of an ostomy surgery. Conclusion: The multidimensional nature of the self-care competence of patients with intestinal stoma justifies exploring other domains of this competence besides knowledge in the preoperative phase given the identified benefits on the process of adaptation after surgery
  • Living with an ileostomy: a case study on the transition process

    Background: An ileostomy affects the person’s identity, leading to a process of transition. The person’s response to transition, as the subject of nursing study, should be explored, as well as the context in which the transition is experienced. Objective: To describe and understand the transition phenomenon experienced by a person with an ileostomy and diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis, based on Afaf Meleis’ Transition Model. Methodology: An instrumental case study was conducted using the qualitative research paradigm. The case was selected through a convenience sampling strategy and data were collected through observation, analysis of the electronic nursing records, and semi-structured interviews. Results: The person and the context involved in the transition process are two non-recurring realities that influence its course. Conclusion: Afaf Meleis’ Transition Model allows understanding the transition process experienced by the ileostomy patient in terms of nature, conditions, and response patterns of transitions.
  • Development of a self-care ability assessment form for the person with an intestinal stoma

    Background: An intestinal stoma implies multiple and significant changes that tend to be overcome through the development of ostomy self-care skills. The identification of the patient’s specific needs during this adaptation process will help nurses’ decisionmaking and contribute to a rigorous nursing diagnosis process, thus improving the quality and continuity of care delivery to this population group. Objectives: To develop an instrument for assessing the self-care competence of the person with an intestinal stoma. Methodology: Methodological study consisting of the development of a form. Content validity was ensured by expert review using a focus group. The form was applied to a convenience sample of 180 participants. Results: A form was developed with 45 measurement indicators divided into 6 domains. It showed very good internal consistency (overall Cronbach’s alpha > .90) and solid content validity. Conclusion: The form proved to be a reliable and easy to use method to assess the development of self-care competence in people with an intestinal stoma.
