- Programa de Exercício Após Cirurgia por Cancro de Mama : Estudo Piloto Aleatorizado e ControladoPublication . Sequeira, Margarida; Gomes da Silva, MadalenaPurpose: This paper reports on short term, preliminary findings of a study which aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a group exercise program on physical activity levels (PA), body mass index (BMI) and quality of life (QOL) of women after breast cancer surgery. Methods: A pilot randomized controlled trial. Thirty-seven women, submitted to breast cancer surgery in the Hospital Fernando Fonseca, Amadora, submitted to standard physiotherapy intervention, were elected to the study. They were randomly allocated into intervention group (IG, n=19) and control group (CG, n=18). Some elements declined. The final IG was n=11 and the CG n=10, similar in age. All subjects maintained the standard physiotherapy intervention. The experimental group was submitted to the exercise program. All subjects were evaluated in the beginning and final of the program. Results: Preliminary findings suggest results on the physical activity levels (p=0,017) and in quality of life related to physical functioning (p=0,016) and to global health status (p=0,030) at the end of the program. Other outcomes suggested improvement without statistical significance. Conclusions: The limitations of this study do not allow for generalization of findings. These need to be interpreted with caution by clinicians. Exercise is, however, identified as an important strategy to improve heath status in breast cancer patients.
