  • Who are the prominent players in the UEFA champions league? : an approach based on network analysis
Publication . Manuel Clemente, Filipe; M. L. Martins, Fernando
This study aimed to analyze the centrality levels of elite football players. Tactical positions and tactical line-ups were considered factors to be used in analyzing the variance in the prominence of players, measured by social network measures. The best 16 teams from the UEFA Champions league were analyzed during the entire competition. A total of 109 matches were analyzed for this study. Significant statistical differences between positions were found in % indegree (p = 0.001; ES = 0.268, moderate effect), % outdegree (p = 0.001; ES = 0.301, moderate effect) and % betweenness (p = 0.001; ES = 0.114, minimum effect). No statistical differences between tactical line-ups in % outdegree (p = 1.000; ES = 0.001, no effect) or % indegree (p = 1.000; ES = 0.001, no effect) were found. Central midfielders had the greatest values of centrality, thus confirming their importance in the linkage process of the team. Position had great influence on the centrality levels of players.
  • Social network measures to match analysis in soccer : a survey
Publication . Manuel Clemente, Filipe; M. L. Martins, Fernando; Mendes, Rui; G. M. Silva, Frutuoso
In this study we will present the most common and adequate network measures to analyse graph properties and to inspect the prominence of each player on a soccer team. Both approaches can provide a range of useful information. This kind of analysis will help to identify the prominence of players and also characterize the collective organization and patterns of the teams. General measures and centrality levels will be described and the applications will be discussed. By using social network analysis will be possible to quantify the structure of play and predict some behaviour. Such methodology will add new options to the field of match analysis.
  • Effects of regular and conditioned small-sided games on young football players’ heart rate responses, technical performance, and network structure
Publication . González-Víllora, Sixto; Clemente, Filipe Manuel; Martins, Fernando M. L.; Pastor-Vicedo, Juan Carlos
Purpose The purpose of this original work was to analyse the effects of different formats and task conditions in regular small-sided games (SSG) and small-sided conditioned games (SSCG) on heart rate profile and tactical-technical performance (measured by Network and Team Sport Assessment Procedure) among young football players. Methods The total of 16 male elite young players (age: 11.6 ± 0.8 years; practice: 3 ± 1.4 years) were tested. Each participant played in six different formats, namely three 3-a-side games and three 5-a-side games: (i) regular SSG, (ii) attacking contentspace SSCG, (iii) defensive content-concentration SSCG. Each game lasted 5 minutes, and 3 minutes of passive recovery between games was adopted. Results Different formats did not result in statistical differences in heart rate responses. Nevertheless, significant differences were found between formats in technical performance (p < 0.05) and collective organization measured by network (p < 0.05). No statistical differences were observed between task conditions with tactical content in technical performance and collective organization. Conclusions The conditions used in this study may enable coaches/teachers to carry out a more quality and specific training, helping to understand the real effects of SSG/SSCG: smaller formats increase the tactical-technical participation, time in high intensity heart rate, and network density.
  • Effects of the sports level, format of the game and task condition on heart rate responses, technical and tactical performance of youth basketball players
Publication . Manuel Clemente, Filipe; González-Víllora, Sixto; Delextrat, Anne; M. L. Martins, Fernando; Vicedo, Juan Carlos Pastor
The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of different small-sided and conditioning games (SSCG) with different tactical contents on heart rate responses, technical performance and collective organization of youth basketball players of different performance levels. Twenty male basketball players from U14 (13.7 ± 0.8 years old; 4.2 ± 1.4 years of practice) and U16 (15.3 ± 1.1 years old; 6.4 ± 2.1 years of practice) participated in this research study. The two-way MANOVA revealed that the sports level (p = 0.009; = 0.151), format (p = 0.001; = 0.246) and task condition (p = 0.023; = 0.104; small effect size) had significant main effects on heart rate responses. It was also found that the format (p = 0.001; = 0.182) had significant main effects on technical performance. A smaller format significantly increased the heart rate, volume of play, efficiency index and collective density during attacking plays. The SSCG with attacking content statistically increased the heart rate, efficiency index and performance score. Therefore, this study revealed that different SSCGs with tactical content influenced the physiological responses of youth players.
  • Assessment of interactions at children playgrounds using network measures : an exploratory study based on graph theory
Publication . Oliveira, Patrícia; Manuel Clemente, Filipe; M. L. Martins, Fernando
This study has used network measures to classify the children interactions in playground. The variance of network processes between genders was tested. Five girls and boys (n = 10; 4.6 0.6 years old) were observed. Statistical procedures has revealed significant differences between genders in IDC (p = 0.027; ES = 0.476; moderate effect) and BC (p = 0.011; ES = 0.576; moderate effect). Results revealed a greater cooperation process between boys.
  • Network process of children : influence of gender and type of game during cooperative-opposition games
Publication . Silva, Soraia; M. L. Martins, Fernando; Sanchez, Juan; Silva, Frutuoso; Mendes, Rui; Campos, Francisco; Manuel Clemente, Filipe
The children, when playing, are communicating, since this is one of the forms of disinhibition and interaction with the group in which they are inserted (Lima, 2014). Ten children, five boys (n = 5; 5.8 ± 0.4 years old of age) and five girls (n = 5; 5.6 ± 0.5 years old of age) from a elementar school were observed during classes of motor expression. These classes took place once a week for a month, lasting one hour for each session. The interactions were observed with two cameras. It was counted as an interaction when a child passed one ball to another. The results suggest that it was in the “Free Game” that there were significant diferences between the type of game, since it was found in this one that it was easier for a player to be connected with his colleagues, being later the most requested, at the moment they had to pass the ball. Between the type of game and the gender, no significant interactions were found, as children who were the ones most requested by their classmates when they had to pass the ball were not verified. However, children who were crucial to maintaining cross-pass connections were also not checked. With regard to gender, no significant differences were found because no child, both male and female, has become important in sustaining the connections between the passes and the fact that no boys and / or girls were the most requested to make the passes with the ball. Finally, among the game types, no significant differences were found, since the children did not become essential to maintain the connection of passes between colleagues, in any of the matches played. The main objective of this study is to compare the interaction between female and male children in the type of cooperative-opposition games through Social Network Analysis.
  • Technical accuracy it is associated with prominence levels in basketball?
Publication . Manuel Clemente, Filipe; M. L. Martins, Fernando; Mendes, Rui
The aim of this study it was verify the association level between technical accuracy and tactical prominence variables of basketball players from different competitive levels. For such analysis, technical accuracy it was analysed using Team Sports Assessment Procedure and tactical prominence using social network analysis metrics. Forty-two basketball players from four different competitive levels (U14, U16, U18 and amateurs with more than 20 years old) it were observed during three official matches. Correlation tests revealed that %inDegree showed a large positive correlation with efficiency index (r = 0.665; p = 0.001) and very large positive correlation with volume of play (r = 0.844; p = 0.001) and performance score (r = 0.843; p = 0.001). The %outDegree showed very large positive correlation with volume of play (r = 0.743; p = 0.001), efficiency index (r = 0.710; p = 0.001) and performance score (r = 0.776; p = 0.001). This study allowed to identify that technical accuracy has great levels of correlation with tactical prominence, mainly in the case of inDegree centrality.
  • Study of network process in children during cooperation games
Publication . Ferreira, Oriana; Manuel Clemente, Filipe; Amorós, JuanPablo; G. M. Silva, Frutuoso; Mendes, Rui; Campos, Francisco; M. L. Martins, Fernando
While playing, the child progresses in reasoning ability, develops thinking and other skills, creates social relations, understands the environment, develops knowledge and creativity, and satisfies desires (Dallabona& Mendes, 2004). Thus, playing “increases their independence, stimulates their visual and auditory sensibility, values their popular culture, develops motor skills, exercises their imagination, their creativity, socializes, interacts, rebalances, recycles their emotions, their need to know and reinvent, and thus builds their knowledge” (Dallabona& Mendes, 2004, p.4). However, the interaction with a medium that is still unknown requires the child to explore new spaces, new situations, and new contexts, watching for visible behavioral changes, acquiring patterns of communication and interaction with each other (Martins, Clemente,& Mendes, 2015), all of which is essential for the child’s development. The aim of the present study was to analyze the variance between groups of different sizes in different playful games of cooperation. The groups were randomly formed and consisted of groups of 5 (G5) or 10 (G10) members. In the results obtained, it was possible to verify that there are no significant differences in the groups of 5 and 10 children in the values of proximity prestige, whereas in centroid value statistically significant differences were found in the comparison between groups of 5 and those of 10 children, regarding interaction in the cooperation games.
  • Midfielder as the prominent participant in the building attack : a network analysis of national teams in FIFA World Cup 2014
Publication . Manuel Clemente, Filipe; M. L. Martins, Fernando; Wong, P. Del; Kalamaras, Dimitris; Mendes, Rui
This study aimed to analyze the most prominent players’ positions that contributed to the build of attack in football during FIFA World Cup 2014. The connections among teammates in all matches of the tournament were analyzed, and the tactical lineup and players’ positions of players were codified as independent variables. Four centrality network metrics were used to identify the pertinence of each players’ position. A total of 37,864 passes between teammates were recorded. Each national team was analyzed in terms of all their matches, thus all 64 matches from the FIFA World Cup 2014 tournament were analyzed and codified in this study. A total of 128 adjacency matrices and corresponding network graphs were generated and used to compute the centrality metrics. Results revealed that the players’ position (p = 0.001; η2p = 0.143; Power = 1.00; moderate effect size) showed significant main effects on centrality measures. The central midfielders possessed the main values in all centrality measures in the majority of analyzed tactical lineups. Therefore, this study showed that independent of the team strategy, the players’ position of a central midfielder significantly contributed to the build of attack in football, for example, greater cooperation and activity profile.
  • Are the prominent players the most accurate and efficient? : study in football players from different competitive levels
Publication . Manuel Clemente, Filipe; M. L. Martins, Fernando; Mendes, Rui
The aim of this study was to study the association between technical performance (volume of play, efficiency index and performance score) and tactical behaviour (indegree and outdegree centrality) in different competitive levels of football. Sixty-six male soccer players (U12 – 11.23 ± 0.3 years old and 2.11 ± 0.9 years of practice; U14 – 13.43 ± 0.8 years old and 3.76 ± 2.4 years of practice; U16 – 15.67 ± 0.7 years old and 5.32 ± 1.3 years of practice; U18 – 17.84 ± 1.1 years old and 9.21 ± 2.2 years of practice; Amateurs with more than 20 years old – 23.45 ± 4.2 years old and 11.12 ± 2.7 years of practice) were observed in three official matches. The indegree centrality showed a large positive correlation with performance score (r = 0.630; p = 0.001) and very large positive correlation with volume of play (r = 0.735; p = 0.001). The outdegree centrality showed large positive correlation with volume of play (r = 0.535; p = 0.001), efficiency index (r = 0.590; p = 0.001) and performance score (r = 0.669; p = 0.001). In conclusion, this study revealed that the prominence in network activity might be associated with the technical performance in the match.
