- Gamification as a strategic marketing innovation: a systematic literature reviewPublication . Rosário, Albérico Travassos; Casaca, JoaquimGamification has emerged as a prominent technique for enhancing user engagement by incorporating gaming elements into non-gaming settings. Consequently, it is rapidly gaining popularity as a marketing strategy to attract and retain customers. This study examines research trends in this domain through a systematic bibliometric review of studies addressing gamification as an innovative marketing approach. Employing the prisma framework, the review analyses 62 articles indexed in the Scopus™ and WoS™ databases, thereby providing updated insights into the field. The R-based tool “Biblioshiny for Bibliometrix” was used to conduct the bibliometric analysis. The results indicate that gamification contributes to branding, sales growth, and organizational performance. In addition, it supports value cocreation—a central element of contemporary marketing—and promotes social interaction through online forums where users share experiences, knowledge, and feedback. The main theoretical contributions suggest that gamification enhances consumer engagement in immersive experiences, increases brand awareness, strengthens customer loyalty, provides valuable insights into consumer behavior, and stimulates sales by encouraging repeat purchases. From a managerial perspective, the findings highlight the importance of marketing professionals understanding specific game elements and their influence on players’ emotional responses and engagement in order to implement gamification strategies that foster more engaging, interactive, and personalized customer experiences, ultimately contributing to increased brand loyalty, sales, and customer satisfaction.

- Behaviour change support education in chronic disease : an international focus group study with undergraduate students and academic educators in nursing, pharmacy and sport science disciplinesPublication . Félix, Isa Brito; Nascimento, Carla; Pereira, Patrícia; Braam, Katja; Cadogan, Cathal; Strawbridge, Judith; Budler, Leona Cilar; Gosak, Lucija; Pimenta, Nuno; Guerreiro, Mara PereiraIntroduction: Supporting behaviour change for the self-management of chronic diseases is a key competency for health professionals. Little is known about how undergraduate students and academic educators across disciplines and European contexts perceive current education, identify unmet needs relative to a European competency framework, and view the implementation of novel educational tools. To address this gap, we explored students’ and educators’ perspectives, focusing on unmet needs, views on interprofessional education, preferred modalities for using a MOOC, case studies and a simulation software, and perceived facilitators and barriers to use. Methods: Twelve online focus groups were conducted separately with a purposive sample of 39 undergraduate students (seven groups) and 27 academic educators (5 groups). Recruitment spanned national and transnational levels across seven European countries, and included participants from nursing, pharmacy and sport science disciplines within the focus groups. The discussions were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Unmet needs in behaviour change support education were identified (e.g., models and theories, behaviour change techniques, work in partnership to prioritise target behaviours), detailing contributing factors and strategies for their development. Another theme was interprofessional behaviour change education, highlighting perceived benefits, barriers, such as limited training of educators, and implementation strategies. The third theme, on educational products, yielded insights on barriers and facilitators of use, as well as implementation within undergraduate programme. Conclusion: This study highlights the unmet needs in behaviour change support education, the potential of interprofessional education (IPE) and innovative educational products to address these gaps. Findings suggest the need for integrating behaviour change support education into undergraduate curricula, enhancing interprofessional learning on this topic and leveraging digital tools to better equip future professionals in chronic disease management. Strategies emerging from the data can guide these endeavours.
- Age-related decline in intestinal villus length : a cross-sectional study on the human gutPublication . Vara-Luiz, Francisco; Palma, Carolina; Mendes, Ivo; Piçarra, Francisco; Teles, Ana Elisa; Nogueira, Filipe; Costa-Santos, Inês; Nunes, Gonçalo; Patita, Marta; Mocanu, Irina; Pires, Sara; Meira, Tânia; Vieira, Ana; Pinto-Marques, Pedro; Mascarenhas, Paulo; Leskiv, Iryna; Gomes-Pinto, Daniel; Fonseca, JorgeBackground/Objectives: There is widespread agreement that age is a significant predictor of impaired response to nutritional support. This is generally attributed to anabolic resistance, with impaired absorption considered irrelevant/non-existent. However, animal models demonstrate age-related structural changes in the intestinal mucosa that may reduce absorptive capacity. We aimed to evaluate potential histological changes in the duodenal mucosa associated with aging. Methods: We conducted a single-center observational cross-sectional study. Ambulatory younger (18–45 years) and older (≥70 years) adults referred for upper endoscopy were included and underwent duodenal biopsies. Those biopsies were analyzed and compared for histological/histomorphometric changes, including villus length. Clinical and laboratory data were also recorded. Results: One hundred patients were included (46 men/54 women), 50 aged 18–45 years and 50 aged ≥70 years. There were no duodenal endoscopic changes. The median villus length was 0.35 mm (IQR 0.32–0.41 mm) in older people, lower than in younger adults (0.57 mm; IQR 0.47–0.68 mm) (p < 0.001). In a multivariable regression model including age, sex, and Charlson comorbidity index, age remained inversely associated with villus length (p < 0.001). Older participants also exhibited lower hemoglobin, iron, folate, vitamin B12, albumin and vitamin D levels, despite normal inflammatory markers. Conclusions: Aging is associated with histological changes in the intestinal mucosa, including villus shortening. These findings support the concept of mucosal aging as a distinct biological process. Villus shortening may reflect reduced absorptive surface area and could contribute to age-related nutritional vulnerability, although its functional implications remain to be determined.
- Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma : a descriptive epidemiological survey in the Azores, PortugalPublication . Bilhastre, Beatriz; Vala, Helena; Ribeiro, Ana Clara; Faria, Sara; Oliveira, Ana; Branco, Sandra; Pinto, CarlosBovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma (BOSCC) is the most common ocular tumour in cattle, with a multifactorial aetiology involving ultraviolet (UV) radiation, genetic factors, pigmentation, and management practices. A detailed epidemiological characterisation of BOSCC in the Azores, Portugal, is provided, with particular emphasis on its spatial distribution and potential risk determinants. Data were obtained through an epidemiological questionnaire completed by field veterinarians between August 2023 and March 2025. A total of 85 BOSCC cases were recorded across 62 farms—45 on Terceira Island and 17 on São Miguel Island. All affected animals were adult Holstein Friesian dairy cows, managed under extensive pasture-based systems. The nictitating membrane was the most frequently affected structure (69.5%), and multiple lesions occurred in 20% of the cases. Farms located at 200–400 m of altitude presented the highest number of cases. Continuous exposure to UV under pasture-based management represents the main environmental risk factor. Although periocular pigmentation may provide partial protection, other environmental and genetic factors can also contribute to tumour development. Artificial insemination is considered a promising preventive tool, enabling genetic selection for protective traits such as periocular pigmentation. This research provides the first regional epidemiological characterization of BOSCC in the Azores, highlighting the interplay among environmental, genetic, and management-related factors in disease occurrence.
- Frailty through a One Health lens : biological sex, mental health, and oral function in physically active older adultsPublication . Ferreira, Luciano Maia Alves; Brito, José; Colaço, Catarina; Palinkas, Marcelo; Brites, Ricardo; Andrade, Maia e Maia Fischel e; Botelho, João Tiago; Mendes, José João; Siessere, Selma; Regalo, SimoneFrailty is a multifactorial geriatric syndrome marked by reduced physiological reserves and increased vulnerability to adverse outcomes. This multicenter observational study adopted a One Health approach to examine the association between frailty and biological sex, denture use, and antidepressant medication, as well as their impact on bite force, in two transnational cohorts of physically active older adults. The sample included 499 individuals aged ≥60 years (295 from Brazil and 204 from Portugal), all with functional dentition and regular physical activity. Frailty was assessed using the adapted Fried phenotype and classified as non-frail (G0), pre-frail (G1), or frail (G2). Oral health, depressive symptoms (CES-D), bite force, and self-reported use of dentures and antidepressants were analyzed. Frailty was significantly associated with biological sex (p < 0.001), with higher prevalence among women, especially in G2. Antidepressant use was associated with frailty in the Portuguese cohort (p < 0.001) and in the total sample (p = 0.005), but not in Brazil. No significant association was observed between denture use and frailty. However, Brazilian participants without dentures showed significantly higher bite force (p < 0.001), indicating a functional oral health effect. Frailty was associated with female sex and antidepressant use, while bite force emerged as a complementary functional marker for geriatric assessment.
