- Breastfeeding as a strategic driver for One Health : a narrative reviewPublication . Human milk provides unparalleled nutrition and immunological protection, improving infant survival, neurodevelopment, and long-term metabolic outcomes, while reducing maternal risk of breast and ovarian cancer. However, and despite decades of evidence, only 48% of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed worldwide, and breastfeeding remains absent from most sustainability and One Health strategies. This narrative review synthesizes evidence demonstrating that breastfeeding functions as a low-carbon, zero-waste food system that avoids greenhouse gas emissions, land conversion, water consumption, and biodiversity loss linked to commercial milk formula production. At the societal level, breastfeeding reduces health-system costs, strengthens emergency resilience when supply chains fail, and generates long-term economic returns. By integrating evidence across human health, environmental impact and social determinants, this review positions breastfeeding as a strategic One Health intervention and a high-value investment for achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals. Strengthening policy support—including protection against formula marketing, workplace accommodations, and expansion of baby-friendly systems—is essential to unlock breastfeeding’s potential for planetary and public health.
- Impact of CPAP treatment for obstructive sleep apnea on stomatognathic system function : a study on bite force, thickness, and temperature of the masseter and temporal musclesPublication . H.; Siéssere, SelmaObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects the body due to repeated obstruction of the upper airways. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a treatment that can influence muscle function. This nine-month longitudinal study evaluated the effects of CPAP on molar bite force and on the thickness and surface temperature of the masseter and temporal muscles in adults. The study included 12 adults aged 20–70 with moderate or severe OSA, confirmed by polysomnography, all using CPAP. Molar bite force was measured with dynamometer; muscle thickness was evaluated by ultrasound at rest and during maximum contraction; and temperature was assessed using infrared thermography. Measurements were taken before treatment and at 3, 6, and 9 months. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA with Bonferroni correction (p<0.05). Although no significant differences in bite force were observed, only a non-significant tendency toward increased maximum molar force on both sides was noted after nine months. Ultrasound showed a significant increase in right temporal muscle thickness at rest and during contraction, and a left-side increase at rest. Nine months of CPAP therapy in adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea resulted may influence craniofacial muscle morphology without significantly altering stomatognathic function.
- Impact of high-intensity sports practice on stomatognathic system function : an observational studyPublication . This affects the stomatognathic system, underscoring the role of sports dentistry in preventing injuries and orofacial functional changes. This observational study analyzed the stomatognathic system’s functionality in male high-intensity athletes (n = 18) compared to a sedentary group (n = 18). Methods: Functional parameters were analyzed: electromyographic activity during mandibular tasks, masseter and temporal muscles thickness, and molar bite force. Results: Student’s t-test was used for analysis. At mandibular rest, male high-performance athletes showed lower electromyographic activity in the right and left masseter muscles, suggesting adaptation to training. During maximum voluntary contraction, activity was higher in the temporal and masseter muscles, especially in the left masseter, indicating hypertrophy. Electromyographic activity increased during protrusion and lateral movements, particularly in the masseter and temporal muscles, demonstrating a greater functional efficiency group of athletes. They also exhibited greater masseter muscle thickness and thinner temporal muscle thickness, with a significant difference in the right masseter muscle at rest. The group of athletes showed greater molar bite force, with significant differences, indicating greater muscle capacity. Conclusions: Sports practice promotes adaptations in the stomatognathic system, improving its functionality.
