- Concurrent validity and reliability of a free smartphone application for evaluation of jump heightPublication . Dias, Amândio; Pires, Paulo; Santana, Leandro; Marques, Paulo; Espada, Mário C.; Santos, Fernando; Silva, Eduardo Jorge da; Rebelo, André; Teixeira, Diogo S.Background/Objectives: Jump test assessment is commonly used for physical tests, with different type of devices used for its evaluation. The purpose of the present study was to examine the validity and reliability of a freely accessible mobile application (VertVision, version 2.0.5) for measuring jump performance. Methods: With that intent, thirty-eight college age recreationally active subjects underwent test assessment after a specific warm-up, performing countermovement jumps (CMJs) and squat jumps (SJs) on a contact platform while being recorded with a smartphone camera. Jump height was the criterion variable, with the same formula being used for both methods. Data analysis was performed by two experienced observers. Results: The results showed strong correlations with the contact platform (ICC > 0.9) for both jumps. Furthermore, between-observer reliability was also high (ICC > 0.9; CV ≤ 2.19), with lower values for smallest worthwhile change (≤0.23) and typical error of measurement (≤0.14). Estimation error varied when accounting for both observers, with the SJ accounting for bigger differences (4.1–6.03%), when compared to the CMJ (0.73–3.09%). Conclusions: The study suggests that VertVision is a suitable and handy method for evaluating jump performance. However, it presents a slight estimation error when compared to the contact platform.
- Feasibility and reliability of the My Jump 2 smartphone application in measuring peak power, flight time and jump height in physically active subjects during two different jumping tasksPublication . Dias, Amândio; Pires, Paulo; Santana, Leandro; Marques, Paulo; Espada, Mário; Santos, Fernando; Silva, Eduardo Jorge; Teixeira, DiogoMuscle strength and power are often evaluated through jumping tasks. This study investigates the reliability of My Jump 2 (MJ2), a smartphone application (app) used for this assessment. Two commonly used jumps, the countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ), were analyzed. The study aimed to evaluate the reliability of MJ2 for assessing peak power, jump height, and flight time. Materials and Methods: Thirty-eight undergraduate students performed three jumps of each type in a randomized order. All jumps were executed on a contact mat and simultaneously recorded by the smartphone’s slow-motion camera. Two independent researchers analyzed the video data by identifying take-off and landing frames to calculate flight time. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), coefficient of variation (CV), and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) were used for comparison. Results: Excellent reliability (ICC > 0.9) and high agreement were observed for flight time and jump height in both SJ and CMJ. Typical error and CV analysis indicated low variability for SJ, whereas CMJ jump height showed greater variability. However, peak power reliability and agreement were low (ICC < 0.5) for both jumps. Conclusions: The results suggest that MJ2 is a reliable and valid tool for assessing jump height and flight time, irrespective of the device used for data analysis. However, its power measurement capability differs from a contact platform’s, likely due to the indirect methods used to estimate power. Based on these findings, the MJ2 app can be confidently used to measure flight time and jump height but should be used cautiously when assessing power.
- An overview on the properties of Ximenia oil used as cosmetic in AngolaPublication . Satoto, Gabriel; Fernandes, Ana Sofia; Saraiva, Nuno; Santos, Fernando; Neng, Nuno; Nogueira, José Manuel; Almeida, Tânia Santos de; Araujo, Maria EduardaXimenia (Ximenia americana L.) is a shrub, or small tree, native from Africa and spread across different continents. In Angola, the seeds oil is used by local populations, to prevent sunburn, to smooth and hydrate the skin, and to give it a pleasant color and elasticity, to prevent stretch marks, in pregnant woman, and also as hair conditioner. Herein, an oil sold in the region (LPO), and two others extracted in laboratory, from seeds collected in the same region, were investigated in terms of their composition, chemical properties, UV transmission. The three oils are similar although the LPO is more acidic, 0.48 mg KOH/g. GC-MS analysis indicated that the major components are the fatty acids, oleic (31.82%), nervonic (11.09%), ximenic (10.22%), and hexacosa-17,20,23-trienoic acids (14.59%). Long chain fatty acids, n ≥ 20, accounted for 51.1% of the total fatty acids. A thin film of the oil showed a reduction in transmittance from 200 to 300 nm. Viscosity studies of the LPO indicated that at normal temperature of skin, the oil can be spread over the skin as a thin film. At concentrations up to 10 µg/mL, the LPO is not toxic to human keratinocytes, suggesting the safety of this oil.
