- HPLC determination of theophylline and paracetamol in fresh and powdered milkPublication . Fernandes, T.; Aguiar, J.; Pinto, J. F.; Fernandes, A. I."Theophylline and paracetamol are drugs used worldwide both in human and veterinary medicine. Paracetamol (or acetaminophen) is employed as analgesic and antipyretic, and theophylline is a bronchodilator drug used in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Both drugs are extensively used in pediatrics and their dosage is based on the child's body weight. Due to possible liver toxicity (paracetamol) and narrow therapeutic index (theophylline) it is imperative to carefully select and monitor the dose administered to children. Additionally, the recent proposal of milk as a platform to deliver drugs in pediatrics has prompted the development of a simple and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) quantification method, of both theophylline and paracetamol, in the complex matrix that milk represents."
- Medicinal powders made of fresh milk for pediatric usePublication . Aguiar, J. P.; Fernandes, T.; Nese, C.; Pinto, J. F.; Fernandes, A. I."Nowadays, the need to formulate medicines specifically designed for children is imperative [1] and solid dosage forms are the first choice for providing the required drug stability and dose accuracy. Milk, as a worldwide accepted food, is proposed in this study as a platform to deliver drugs orally in pediatrics. Therefore, the main goals of this project are: (a) to assess the properties of spray-dried milk powders, (b) to evaluate drug-milk interactions and (c) to ascertain the stability of the spray-dried milk powders."
- Metal contaminants in cinnamon samples marketed in PortugalPublication . Bernardo, M. A.; Fernandes, T.; Maia, J. M.; Mesquita, M. F.; Brito, J. A. A.; Gonçalves, L. L."Cinnamon has long been used by man for medicinal purposes and as a spice in many traditions wordwhile. Regardless of its alleged healing properties, spices and herbs may be the source of undesirable toxic elements. The presence of metals such as Al, Hg, Cd, Pb, Mn, among others, in food and food supplements, even at restricted values, may cause deleterious effects to human health. Although the consumption of cinnamon and cinnamon-based supplements has increased in the last decades in Portugal, little is known about its elemental composition. Therefore, it is important to investigate the potential presence of toxic elements in those samples, available in the Portuguese market."
- Milk as a drug delivery platform in paediatricsPublication . Aguiar, J. P.; Fernandes, T.; Nese, C.; Fernandes, A. I.; Pinto, J. F."Purpose: to assess the physical properties of spray dried milk powders and evaluate drug-milk interactions."
- WDXRF Spectrometry for elemental impurities analysis in drug products and dietary supplementsPublication . Figueiredo, A.; Costa, I. M.; Fernandes, T.; Gonçalves, L. L.; Brito, J.
