- Development of casein micellar pediatric formulationsPublication . Brachkova, M. I.; Pinto, J. T.; Fernandes, A. I.; Pinto, J. F."The current need for medicines specifically designed for children, which consider ease of administration, dose flexibility, palatability, safety of excipients, stability and therapeutic equivalency of pediatric dosage forms, has driven the development of pediatric drug formulations. In the present work casein (CN) based micellar formulations are evaluated as vehicles for the oral delivery of pediatric drugs, since caseins are nontoxic, biodegradable, GRAS materials and nanoencapsulation of drugs can improve their bioavailability. Chemical crosslinking of casein by carbodiimide (EDC) has been studied as an approach to improve the stability of the CN micelles and to tailor drug release."
- Metal contaminants in cinnamon samples marketed in PortugalPublication . Bernardo, M. A.; Fernandes, T.; Maia, J. M.; Mesquita, M. F.; Brito, J. A. A.; Gonçalves, L. L."Cinnamon has long been used by man for medicinal purposes and as a spice in many traditions wordwhile. Regardless of its alleged healing properties, spices and herbs may be the source of undesirable toxic elements. The presence of metals such as Al, Hg, Cd, Pb, Mn, among others, in food and food supplements, even at restricted values, may cause deleterious effects to human health. Although the consumption of cinnamon and cinnamon-based supplements has increased in the last decades in Portugal, little is known about its elemental composition. Therefore, it is important to investigate the potential presence of toxic elements in those samples, available in the Portuguese market."
- Evaluation of the ability of powdered milk to produce mini-tablets containing paracetamolPublication . Pinto, J. T.; Brachkova, M. I.; Fernandes, A. I.; Pinto, J. F."In recent years the development of medicines for paediatric use have gained increase interest. Small, flexible solid dosage forms, such as mini-tablets, are an attractive choice when developing new medicines for children. Excipients, though innocuous in adults, may pose a threat to the different paediatric age groups and, therefore, milk, a complete, universally accepted food, used in children’s diet since birth, seems to be an innovative and attractive excipient when formulating for the aforementioned population. In this study a full factorial design was employed to identify the variables (both formulation and manufacturing) and their interactions with significant impact on selected properties of mini-tablets, containing paracetamol and powdered milk, produced by direct compression."
- Searches for supersymmetry based on events with b jets and four W bosons in pp collisions at 8 TeVPublication . CMS collaboration (2140 authors); Hollar, Jonathan; Nayak, Aruna; Bargassa, Pedrame; Beirão Da Cruz E Silva, Cristóvão; Faccioli, Pietro; Ferreira Parracho, Pedro Guilherme; Gallinaro, Michele; Lloret Iglesias, Lara; Nguyen, Federico; Rodrigues Antunes, Joao; Seixas, Joao; Varela, Joao; Vischia, Pietro; David Tinoco Mendes, Andre; Silva, Pedro; Musella, Pasquale; Pela, Joao; Leonardo, NunoFive mutually exclusive searches for supersymmetry are presented based on events in which b jets and four W bosons are produced in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 inverse femtobarns, were collected with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2012. The five studies differ in the leptonic signature from the W boson decays, and correspond to all-hadronic, single-lepton, opposite-sign dilepton, same-sign dilepton, and greater-than-or-equal-to-3 lepton final states. The results of the five studies are combined to yield 95% confidence level limits for the gluino and bottom-squark masses in the context of gluino and bottom-squark pair production, respectively. In the limit when the lightest supersymmetric particle is light, gluino and bottom-squark masses are excluded below 1280 and 570 GeV, respectively.
