- How to choose the appropriate cannulation technique for vascular access in hemodialysis patientsPublication . Sousa, Clemente Neves; Teles, Paulo; Ribeiro, Olga; Sousa, Rui; Lira, Marta Nunes; Delgado, Elisabete; Oliveira, Debora; Campos, Luís; Fernandes, Filipa; Moura, Sandra Cristina Mendo; Delgado, Millena Freire; Sá, Tiago Gomes; Teixeira, Sílvia Mónica Pereira; Souza, Lara Helk; Ribeiro, Rita Cássia Helú Mendonça; Oliveira, Gabriela Fernanda Neves; Mendonça, Ana Elza Oliveira; Ozen, NurtenThe cannulation technique is important for the survival of the arteriovenous access. Choosing the appropriate technique is a complex decision. Such choice must be customized to patients, considering their characteristics, the type of arteriovenous access and the experience of the hemodialysis team. We describe seven items that can help nurses to identify the appropriate cannulation technique: type of arteriovenous access; drainage vein; hygienic self-care profile; experience of the nursing staff in the cannulation technique and nurse-to-patient ratio; hemodialysis treatment method; patient's condition; and patient's decision. Such items can help nurses in decision-making on the "ideal" cannulation technique for each patient.
- Impact of a simulation-based interprofessional workshop (LINKS) on Portuguese healthcare students’ perception of roles and competencies: a quasi-experimental pilot studyPublication . Sa-Couto, Carla; Fernandes, Filipa; Carvalho Pinto, Cristina; Loureiro, Elizabete; Cerqueira, CarlaIntroduction There is a scarcity of simulation-based interprofessional (IP) programs in Portugal, with a notorious absence in undergraduate education. This paper describes the first step towards the development of an interprofessional education (IPE) undergraduate program, namely the implementation and preliminary assessment of the workshop LINKS – Lifting INterprofessional Knowledge through Simulation. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the educational effect of LINKS, in medical and nursing undergraduate students’ attitudes towards IP teamwork and collaborative practices, and their perception of roles and competencies within an IP team. Methods A total of 23 final-year students participated in the workshop. Teams of three or four elements (medical and nursing students) were exposed to two critical patient management simulation scenarios. To assess the impact of the workshop on students’ perception of IP collaborative practice, two surveys (ATTITUDES and IPEC) were applied before and after the workshop. Additionally, students’ opinion/satisfaction towards the workshop and its curricular integration was explored. Results Students’ awareness of the relevancy of IP learning and self-competency in IP practice improved. For all subdomains and overall scores, statistically significant differences were found when comparing the pre- and post-scores, for both medical and nursing students, in both surveys. All students agreed that the workshop added educational value to their training, and recommended its integration in the formal curriculum, with a first round in the penultimate year and repeated in the last year. Discussion Considering the pre–post test results and anecdotal comments shared during the session, we may infer that this single IPE event contributed to a clearer understanding of the team dynamic and individual role definition, increased the motivation to engage in collaborative practice between physicians and nurses and potentially challenged pre-existent stereotypes of each professional group. These findings corroborate the need for sustainable simulation-based IP programs, integrated in the undergraduate curricula, promoting early clinical interactions of different professional groups. We envision that the results of this study can help to inform future curriculum planning and provide useful insights that can be used within and between Portuguese institutions to develop a common IP undergraduate program.
- Nursing Intervention to Prevent and Manage Delirium in Critically Ill Patients: A Scoping ReviewPublication . Fernandes, Filipa; Santos, Mariana; Anacleto, Ana Margarida; Jerónimo, Cátia; Ferreira, Óscar Manuel Ramos; Baixinho, Cristina LavaredaDelirium is an acute neuropsychiatric syndrome of multifactorial etiology with a high incidence in people admitted to intensive care units. In addition to reversible impairment of cognitive processes, it may be associated with changes in thinking and perception. If, in the past, it was considered an expected complication of severe disease, nowadays, delirium is associated with a poor short-term and long-term prognosis. Knowing that its prevention and early identification can reduce morbidity, mortality, and health costs, it is vital to investigate nursing interventions focused on delirium in critically ill patients. This study aimed to identify nursing interventions in the prevention and management of delirium in critically ill adults. The method used to answer the research question was a scoping review. The literature search was performed in the Medline (via PubMed), CINAHL (via EBSCOhost), Scopus, Web of Science, and JBI databases. The final sample included 15 articles. Several categories of non-pharmacological interventions were identified, addressing the modifiable risk factors that contribute to the development of delirium, and for which nurses have a privileged position in their minimization. No drug agent can, by itself, prevent or treat delirium. However, psychoactive drugs are justified to control hyperactive behaviors through cautious use. Early diagnosis, prevention, or treatment can reduce symptoms and improve the individual’s quality of life. Therefore, nursing professionals must ensure harmonious coordination between non-pharmacological and pharmacological strategies.

- Radio‐cephalic fistula recovered with drainage to median basilic vein by straightening of the forearm cephalic vein: A case reportPublication . Costa, Luísa Lemos; Matos, António Norton; Almeida, Paulo; Teles, Paulo; Loureiro, Luís; Campos, Luís; Delgado, Elisabete; Oliveira, Debora; Campos, Tiago; Inácio, Marta; Fernandes, Filipa; Coutinho, Sara; Ventura, Ana; Pereira, Susana; Castro, Ana; Xavier, Eva; Sousa, Clemente NevesThe distal arteriovenous fistula (AVF) has less complications and better patency than the proximal fistula, when it works properly. The complications of outflow of the fistula are complex, and it is necessary to analyze all solutions to solve the problem. We introduce a novel approach to solve outflow problems of a radio-cephalic AVF by straightening of the forearm cephalic vein with drainage into the median basilic vein.

- The impact of the trays festival within the economy of the city of TomarPublication . Dionísio, Marta; Pires da Silva, Cláudia; Marques, C. G.; Almeida, Paula; Fernandes, Filipa; Pinto Coelho, João; Camponês, AndréThis study seeks to analyse the impact of a cultural event, the Trays Festival, in the city of Tomar, located in the centre of Portugal. Within the process of a region’s touristic development there are several domains such as the historical, cultural and natural that must be considered while analysing a specific manifestation of a tradition which has its origins in the cult of the Holy Spirit. According to the growing importance that cultural heritage assumes nowadays, the Trays Festival was inscribed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity this year, being a way to preserve the city’s cultural history as wellas an instrument of promotion of the city making it a tourist destination of choice. This is a goal which preserves the authenticity of the historical and cultural characteristics of the city and its traditions, valuing at the same time its own identity. Perceiving the capacity that this type of events has on attracting economic benefits, it is often the justification used for their accomplishment. In economic terms these events are catalysts for attracting tourists which leads to the increase of needs such as the knowledge of foreign languages and the use of apps and other technological tools. Thus, this study aims to provide an integrated learning through the interpretation of the manifestations of intangible cultural heritage with a high touristic value namely the Trays Festival. Therefore, it will also provide insight into contemporary social and cultural dynamics in the promotion, enhancement and attraction of tourists boosting the local economy. Thus, this project, which started in 2019 and is still under development, aims to analyse the impact of the Trays Festival concerning the economic, social and cultural fields, as well as the ability to promote and attract tourists. So far, data has been collected from the local tourist accommodation, the focus of this work.
- The promotion and enhancement of Tomar's heritage: the creation of a viewpoints routePublication . Marques, C. G.; Almeida, Paula; Dionísio, Marta; Pires da Silva, Cláudia; Pais, Sónia; Fernandes, FilipaTomar is a Portuguese city located in the centre of Portugal. Its history is closely linked to the history of Portugal, having been the headquarters of the Military Orders of the Temple and of Christ. The city of Tomar is characterized by a great artistic, cultural and natural wealth, being the Templar Castle and the Convent of Christ its greatest ex-libris. Less known but of great historical value are the viewpoints of this Templar city that allow tourists to enjoy the magnificent and diverse landscapes. In order to promote this heritage, this study aims to create the Viewpoints Route of Tomar. This route involves the study and characterization of the viewpoints, the development of the route and an investment in its promotion and accessibility (access roads, signs, cleaning, etc.). It is intended the use of information and communication technologies to provide information to tourists, namely QR codes, audio guides, virtual reality, augmented reality, among others. It is also intended to use gamification strategies (i.e. geocaching) and the presentation of information in several languages to increase the attractiveness of this heritage. In economic terms, these viewpoints routes are ways of attracting tourists to the region and to create value, promoting the development of infrastructures and new business models. At the same time, there are some environment damages which demands some procedures to assure sustainability.
