- Conditioning factors for the development of the self-care competence in the person with a tracheostomyPublication . Queirós, Sílvia; Santos, Célia; Brito, Alice; Pinto, IgorBackground: The development of the self-care competence in the person with a stoma promotes a healthy transition to a life with a stoma. Studies suggest the existence of factors conditioning the development of the ostomy self-care competence. Objectives: To identify the conditioning factors for the development of the self-care competence in the person with a tracheostomy. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted in a nonprobability sample composed of 80 participants. Data were collected using the “Assessment Form of the Self-Care Competence in the Person with a Tracheostomy. Results: The conditioning factors for the development of the tracheostomy self-care competence were: being a man, having low schooling, having had an emergency surgery, having a temporary ostomy, and having a caregiver. The postoperative period proved to be a facilitating factor. Conclusion: The recognition of the existence of factors conditioning the development of the tracheostomy self-care competence allows nurses to identify conditions of vulnerability in their patients and adapt their interventions with a view to enhancing their autonomy.
- Data, diagnoses, and nursing interventions focused on a person living with an ostomy: scoping review protocolPublication . Silva, Carla; Brito, Alice; Paiva, Abel; Queiros, Carmen; Morais, Ernesto; Bastos, FernandaIntroduction: The building of an ostomy generates changes that trigger a health/disease transition. Nurses play a major role in adapting to the new condition. It is important to formalize nursing knowledge that supports nurses’ decision-making in order to incorporate it into information systems that promote evidence-based nursing practice. Objetive: Continuously map the nursing knowledge involved in the process of care planning, focusing on the person living with an ostomy. Methods: Joanna Briggs Institute's scoping review guidance and, the Cochrane Collaboration's guidance on living systematic reviews will be followed to meet the review's objective. Two independent reviewers will evaluate the relevance of the articles, the extraction and synthesis of the data. Studies published in English, Spanish and Portuguese from 2009 onwards, searched in MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL (EBSCO), Scopus, JBI Library of Systematic Reviews and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, OpenGrey, RCAAP and Dart-Europa will be included. Results: It is expected to map the data, diagnoses and nursing interventions centered on the person living with an ostomy, allowing the formalization of the knowledge involved in the design of nursing care for this population group. Conclusion: This scope review will show trends that will support nurses' decision making in order to improve the quality of clinical practice.
- Development of a Form to Assess the Self-Care Competence of the Person with a TracheostomyPublication . Queirós, Sílvia; Santos, Célia; Brito, Alice; Pinto, IgorBackground: The development of the self-care competence in the person with a tracheostomy is described as a key driver for a healthy transition to life with a tracheostomy. An instrument for assessing the self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy contributes to nurses’ decision-making and promotes the quality of care. Objectives: To develop a tool for assessing the self-care competence of the person with a tracheostomy. Methodology: A methodological study was conducted. Content validity was obtained through the judgment of experts, with a focus group methodology. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The instrument was applied to a sample of 80 participants, using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Results: The study resulted in a form with 39 indicators, divided into 6 areas, which showed good internal consistency (alpha = 0.89) and recognised content validity. Conclusion: The final version of the form is applicable, and has the potential to be used in future studies on its validity.
- Development of a self-care ability assessment form for the person with an intestinal stomaPublication . Silva, Carla; Cardoso, Teresa; Gomes, Ana; Santos, Célia; Brito, AliceBackground: An intestinal stoma implies multiple and significant changes that tend to be overcome through the development of ostomy self-care skills. The identification of the patient’s specific needs during this adaptation process will help nurses’ decisionmaking and contribute to a rigorous nursing diagnosis process, thus improving the quality and continuity of care delivery to this population group. Objectives: To develop an instrument for assessing the self-care competence of the person with an intestinal stoma. Methodology: Methodological study consisting of the development of a form. Content validity was ensured by expert review using a focus group. The form was applied to a convenience sample of 180 participants. Results: A form was developed with 45 measurement indicators divided into 6 domains. It showed very good internal consistency (overall Cronbach’s alpha > .90) and solid content validity. Conclusion: The form proved to be a reliable and easy to use method to assess the development of self-care competence in people with an intestinal stoma.
- Especificação dos diagnósticos de enfermagem associados à pessoa que vive com um estoma que tomam por foco o conhecimentoPublication . Silva, Carla; Brito, Alice
- Liver transplant recipients: nursing therapeutics during follow-upPublication . Mota, Liliana; Bastos, Fernanda; Brito, AliceBackground: The implementation of nursing therapeutics adjusted to the actual needs of liver transplant recipients can have a significant impact on transplantation outcomes since, after transplantation, patients are encouraged to change the way in which they manage their therapeutic regimen towards success. Objective: To identify the nursing foci and the interventions implemented to address the healthcare needs of liver transplant recipients. Methodology: Qualitative, retrospective study conducted at a transplant center, using descriptive statistics to analyze nursing records between July 2010 and September 2014. Results: The most common nursing focus was susceptibility to infection (67.30%) with the implementation of interventions related primarily to the teaching action type. Most of the interventions (57.07%) were related to the observing action type. Conclusion: The follow-up of liver transplant recipients focuses essentially on bodily processes and the monitoring of signs and symptoms of disease complications.
- Living with an ileostomy: a case study on the transition processPublication . Silva, Carla; Sousa, Florbela; Lima, Jorge; Pinto, Maria; Brito, Alice; Cruz, InêsBackground: An ileostomy affects the person’s identity, leading to a process of transition. The person’s response to transition, as the subject of nursing study, should be explored, as well as the context in which the transition is experienced. Objective: To describe and understand the transition phenomenon experienced by a person with an ileostomy and diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis, based on Afaf Meleis’ Transition Model. Methodology: An instrumental case study was conducted using the qualitative research paradigm. The case was selected through a convenience sampling strategy and data were collected through observation, analysis of the electronic nursing records, and semi-structured interviews. Results: The person and the context involved in the transition process are two non-recurring realities that influence its course. Conclusion: Afaf Meleis’ Transition Model allows understanding the transition process experienced by the ileostomy patient in terms of nature, conditions, and response patterns of transitions.
- Nursing Interventions to Promote Self-Care in a Candidate for a Bowel Elimination Ostomy: Scoping ReviewPublication . Soares-Pinto, Igor; Queirós, Sílvia; Alves, Paulo; Manuel, Tânia; Santos, Célia; Brito, AliceObjectives: To identify nursing interventions, their characteristics, and outcomes for promoting self-care in candidates for a bowel elimination ostomy. Materials and methods: A scoping review was carried out based on the Joanna Briggs Institute’s recommendations. For this, studies published in Portuguese, English, and Spanish on the Web of Science, CINAHL, and Scopus databases and without a time limit were selected on November 9, 2020. Results: Of 2248 articles identified, 41 were included in this review. We identified 20 nursing interventions associated with the self-care of patients with an ostomy; most of them have gaps in their content, method, and frequency or dosing. More than 30 indicators were identified to assess the impact of nursing interventions; however, most of them were indirect assessments. Conclusion: There is scarce evidence regarding the different aspects that must be involved in nursing interventions for patients with a stoma. Moreover, there is no standardization in methods, frequency, or dosing of intervention. It is urgent to define the content, method, and frequency of nursing interventions necessary to promote self-care in patients with a bowel elimination ostomy and to use assessment tools that directly measure stoma self-care competence
