- A measurement of the ratio of the $W$ and $Z$ cross sections with exactly one associated jet in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV with ATLASPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3024 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, Joao; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muino, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, Andre; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Goncalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amelia; Maneira, Jose; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, Antonio; Palma, Alberto; Pina, Joao Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, Joao; Silva, Jose; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe ratio of production cross sections of the W and Z bosons with exactly one associated jet is presented as a function of jet transverse momentum threshold. The measurement has been designed to maximise cancellation of experimental and theoretical uncertainties, and is reported both within a particle-level kinematic range corresponding to the detector acceptance and as a total cross-section ratio. Results are obtained with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1. The results are compared with perturbative leading-order, leading-log, and next-to-leading-order QCD predictions, and are found to agree within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. The ratio is measured for events with a single jet with p_T > 30 GeV to be 8.73 +/- 0.30 (stat) +/- 0.40 (syst) in the electron channel, and $ 8.49 +/- 0.23 (stat) +/- 0.33 (syst) in the muon channel.
- A study of the material in the ATLAS inner detector using secondary hadronic interactionsPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3017 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe ATLAS inner detector is used to reconstruct secondary vertices due to hadronic interactions of primary collision products, so probing the location and amount of material in the inner region of ATLAS. Data collected in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC, with a minimum bias trigger, are used for comparisons with simulated events. The reconstructed secondary vertices have spatial resolutions ranging from ~200 microns to 1 mm. The overall material description in the simulation is validated to within an experimental uncertainty of about 7%. This will lead to a better understanding of the reconstruction of various objects such as tracks, leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum.
- Combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson using up to 4.9 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHCPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3049 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC using datasets corresponding to integrated luminosities from 1.04 fb-1 to 4.9 fb-1 of pp collisions collected at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The Higgs boson mass ranges 112.9-115.5 GeV, 131-238 GeV and 251-466 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level (CL), while the range 124-519 GeV is expected to be excluded in the absence of a signal. An excess of events is observed around mH ~ 126 GeV with a local significance of 3.5 standard deviations (sigma). The local significance of H -> gamma gamma, H -> ZZ(*) -> lll'l' and H -> WW(*) -> lvl'v, the three most sensitive channels in this mass range, are 2.8 sigma, 2.1 sigma and 1.4 sigma, respectively. The global probability for the background to produce such a fluctuation anywhere in the explored Higgs boson mass range 110-600 GeV is estimated to be ~1.4% or, equivalently 2.2 sigma.

ATLAS collaboration (3035 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA QCD analysis is reported of ATLAS data on inclusive W and Z boson production in pp collisions at the LHC, jointly with ep deep inelastic scattering data from HERA. The ATLAS data exhibit sensitivity to the light quark sea composition and magnitude at Bjorken x ~ 0.01. Specifically, the data support the hypothesis of a symmetric composition of the light quark sea at low x. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea quark distributions is determined to be 1.00(+0.25-0.28) at absolute four-momentum transfer squared Q^2 = 1.9 GeV^2 and x = 0.023.

ATLAS collaboration (3029 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Magalhaes Martins, Paulo Jorge; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutDetailed measurements of the electron performance of the ATLAS detector at the LHC are reported, using decays of the Z, W and J/psi particles. Data collected in 2010 at sqrt(s)=7 TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of almost 40 pb^-1. The inter-alignment of the inner detector and the electromagnetic calorimeter, the determination of the electron energy scale and resolution, and the performance in terms of response uniformity and linearity are discussed. The electron identification, reconstruction and trigger efficiencies, as well as the charge misidentification probability, are also presented.
- Forward-backward correlations and charged-particle azimuthal distributions in pp interactions using the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3034 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutUsing inelastic proton-proton interactions at sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 7 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, measurements have been made of the correlations between forward and backward charged-particle multiplicities and, for the first time, between forward and backward charged-particle summed transverse momentum. In addition, jet-like structure in the events is studied by means of azimuthal distributions of charged particles relative to the charged particle with highest transverse momentum in a selected kinematic region of the event. The results are compared with predictions from tunes of the PYTHIA and HERWIG++ Monte Carlo generators, which in most cases are found to provide a reasonable description of the data.
- Jet energy measurement with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeVPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3013 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe jet energy scale (JES) and its systematic uncertainty are determined for jets measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38 inverse pb. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0.4 or R=0.6. Jet energy and angle corrections are determined from Monte Carlo simulations to calibrate jets with transverse momenta pt > 20 GeV and pseudorapidities eta<4.5. The JES systematic uncertainty is estimated using the single isolated hadron response measured in situ and in test-beams. The JES uncertainty is less than 2.5% in the central calorimeter region (eta<0.8) for jets with 60 < pt < 800 GeV, and is maximally 14% for pt < 30 GeV in the most forward region 3.2 50 GeV after a dedicated correction for this effect. The JES is validated for jet transverse momenta up to 1 TeV to the level of a few percent using several in situ techniques by comparing a well-known reference such as the recoiling photon pt, the sum of the transverse momenta of tracks associated to the jet, or a system of low-pt jets recoiling against a high-pt jet. More sophisticated jet calibration schemes are presented based on calorimeter cell energy density weighting or hadronic properties of jets, providing an improved jet energy resolution and a reduced flavour dependence of the jet response. The JES systematic uncertainty determined from a combination of in situ techniques are consistent with the one derived from single hadron response measurements over a wide kinematic range. The nominal corrections and uncertainties are derived for isolated jets in an inclusive sample of high-pt jets.
- Jet mass and substructure of inclusive jets in $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV $pp$ collisions with the ATLAS experimentPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3058 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutRecent studies have highlighted the potential of jet substructure techniques to identify the hadronic decays of boosted heavy particles. These studies all rely upon the assumption that the internal substructure of jets generated by QCD radiation is well understood. In this article, this assumption is tested on an inclusive sample of jets recorded with the ATLAS detector in 2010, which corresponds to 35 pb^-1 of pp collisions delivered by the LHC at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. In a subsample of events with single pp collisions, measurementes corrected for detector efficiency and resolution are presented with full systematic uncertainties. Jet invariant mass, kt splitting scales and n-subjettiness variables are presented for anti-kt R = 1.0 jets and Cambridge-Aachen R = 1.2 jets. Jet invariant-mass spectra for Cambridge-Aachen R = 1.2 jets after a splitting and filtering procedure are also presented. Leading-order parton-shower Monte Carlo predictions for these variables are found to be broadly in agreement with data. The dependence of mean jet mass on additional pp interactions is also explored.
- Kshort and $\Lambda$ production in $pp$ interactions at $\sqrt{s}=0.9$ and 7 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHCPublication . ATLAS collaboration (2995 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe production of Kshort and Lambda hadrons is studied in inelastic pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using a minimum-bias trigger. The observed distributions of transverse momentum, rapidity, and multiplicity are corrected to hadron level in a model-independent way within well defined phase-space regions. The distribution of the production ratio of Lambdabar to Lambda baryons is also measured. The results are compared with various Monte Carlo simulation models. Although most of these models agree with data to within 15% in the Kshort distributions, substantial disagreements with data are found in the Lambda distributions of transverse momentum.
