- Intercultural interpretation strategies in the museum: the case study of a guided visit to the Coach Museum in LisbonPublication . Brito, MiguelA guided tour to the Coach Museum can either be a nightmare or a pleasant dream depending on the information guides convey about the vehicles exhibited. Lively visits may be provided where intercultural interpretation strategies are deployed, awakening in the tourist different kinds of emotions, from piety to amusement, from fantasy to reality. This paper discusses the different characteristics displayed by tourist guide interpretations at the Lisbon Coach Museum. The author followed fifty professional guides during their tours at the museum, during the months of September and October 2009. The anthropological technique applied is direct observation. The study of tourist guides at their working context enables the identification of the intercultural skills developed by these professionals, such as their good knowledge and their language proficiency. However, some inappropriate attitudes were also detected. The interpretative strategies adopted in communication serve the scope of engaging tourists in the visit performance – questions, humour, storytelling, connections with the tourists’ reality and fantasy. Although the information conveyed is similar, the interpretation strategies vary according to the tourists’ nationality and to the guides and their personal characteristics. Conclusions suggest that the appropriate intercultural communication skills and the effective use of intercultural interpretation strategies facilitate the change of the tourists’ world representations.
- Lisbon and the Alcântara neighbourhood changes: is tourism invading or renovating?Publication . Zarrilli, Luca; Brito, MiguelAlcântara neighbourhood in Lisbon has good conditions to develop as a tourist destination in the next few years. It is probably the best district of Lisbon to recall the industrial era. The aim of this article is to understand what is currently going on in the heritage and tourism sector, and what is foreseeable to happen in the near future. A qualitative-quantitative approach has been used. The qualitative part has been based upon the direct observation of the analysed area. The quantitative part has been based upon the figures related to accommodation in Lisbon supplied by Turismo de Portugal. We believe that Alcântara district will fit profitably into the tourist boom that Lisbon has been experiencing for a number of years, thanks to several factors: Its diversified resources; Its dynamic and “trendy” neighbourhood image; Its barycentric position; Its good accessibility; The rapid increase in the receptive supply.
- Lisbon experience. Mobility, quality of life and tourist image: a surveyPublication . Zarrili, Luca; Brito, MiguelTourists recently awarded Lisbon as the best city break destination in Europe. This article analyses the various types of tourist experience in the city of Lisbon. The research method is the questionnaire, aimed at investigating the choices of tourists in the area of mobility, their perception of the quality of life and their level of appreciation of neighbourhoods, landmarks and infrastructures. There is an obvious link between the quality of life and the quality of the tourist experience but it is difficult to measure it. Through this questionnaire, we hope to have made a small contribution to the understanding of the perceptive sphere of the individual and his choices in terms of behaviour, which are an essential element of any strategy for tourism marketing.
- A New Pilgrimage in Portugal: Following the Steps of Saint NunoPublication . Braga, Carla; Brito, Miguel; Soares, MargaridaTourism is an ever-changing reality. Pilgrimages need different stimuli to attract new followers. In this context we propose to create an itinerary following the steps of Saint Nuno of Santa Maria, canonized in 2009. Nuno Álvares Pereira was the real name of Saint Nuno, who was granted the title Constable of Portugal, and became a historic legend in the independence wars of Portugal during the political crisis of 1383-1385. After fighting against the power of Castile(Spain) he decided to devote his life to religion as a Carmelite Friar. He represents the perfect hero of the Middle Ages - associating military prowess with a religious character. Our proposal is to create a religious itinerary based on facts of Saint Nuno’s life, so that any visitor may easily discover the country following the steps of this saint who was deeply devoted to the Virgin - in fact, all temples he founded and restored were dedicated to Our Lady. One of his most famous foundations is the Carmelite Convent in Lisbon, which long after his death was an outstanding popular pilgrimage place, and today is still a strong visitor attraction. This exploratory study is based on literature review and text analyses about religious tourism, itinerary design and the life of the saint. The fieldwork includes acknowledging the different sites related to the saint. We believe that it is possible to create an original religious itinerary in Portugal, which will attract not only foreigners but also domestic visitors, increasing the ‘Production and Consumption of the Pilgrimage Tourism Experience’.
- Tour Guides-Educators as Heralds of Change : Oeiras’ Pombal Palace as ExamplePublication . Carvalho, Cristina; Brito, MiguelThe article recalls the authors’ experience as certified Guides and lecturers at a higher institute, considering the pioneering visits performed with graduate students over the years to Oeiras’ Pombal palace. Brochu and Merriman (2002) sustain each generation of interpreters enriches the legacy of its predecessors by expanding the science and enriching the art. Pastorelli (2003) adds a good storyteller must set its audience into a trance, thus allowing them to dive into the story, while Tilden (1997) stresses the educational side of interpretation linked to meaning, the use of objects and instructive media. Indeed, mental time travel is key to the clients’ understanding of a site’s evolving identity when complemented with the teasing of the visitors’ senses. A theoretical approach on interpretation opens this document. The historic presentation and approach to the main areas of the venue ensue, followed by shortcomings and suggestions for the future tourist management of the palace and gardens. The empirical proposition also includes the references consulted to its completion. Scientific theory allied to professional practice and the perception of the underlying human factors during the education of Tourism Information students are pivotal to co-create the future of Tourism.
