Abstract(s)
Tobacco consumption is a health problem worldwide, as it is a risk factor for numerous diseases such as cancers, chronic lung diseases, among others, and it is a public sale product (with age restrictions) facilitating its purchase and use. The mouth, being the first part of the body to be in contact with the components generated by the combustion of tobacco, presents a great risk to develop consequences in oral health. In addition to the oral and systemic complications caused by tobacco, it has a large addictive component associated with one of its constituents, nicotine. Nicotine causes addiction to tobacco, and this, together with all other products formed from its combustion, then cause various diseases according to the amount consumed. In an attempt to reduce the harmful effects and additives of conventional tobacco (cigarettes), several companies integrated in the industry and production have been developing new means of distributing nicotine using means and technologies said to be less harmful to health. It is in these technologies that tobacco vaporization is found in the form of electronic cigarettes (E-Cigs), and the most recent development in the area, called heated tobacco (“Heat not Burn”), presented in various formats and brands, the most predominantly called “IQOS”. Currently, these technological innovations are sold and advertised claiming to reduce the presence of toxic components, including those that cause addiction. From the investigations carried out to date, it is possible to conclude that in fact there is a reduction in the release of harmful substances in the aerosol of these systems, as well as a reduction in the parameters associated with periodontal disease in users of these systems, however, we are still faced with a potentially toxic amount, for oral health, of harmful components and histological alterations in the oral cavity.
