Abstract(s)
Lymphoplasmocytic enteritis is not a common cause for inflammatory bowel disease in equines. The inflammation of the mucosa occurs due to an infiltration of inflammatory cells that alter the absorption and digestion processes, resulting in chronic weight loss, recurrent abdominal pain and hypoproteinemia. This dissertation approaches a clinical case of a 25 year old equine with lymphoplasmocytic enteritis that lead to severe cachexia and recurrent colic episodes, with over a year duration. Diagnostic complementary exams were executed, including abdominal and rectal ultrasound, abdominocentesis and blood tests, within the economic possibilities and expectations of the owner. The dissertation also approaches the diagnostic complementary exams that should have been executed for a more precise diagnose. Initially and in a short space of time, a positive response to pharmacologic treatment and change of diet was observed. The reappearance of recurrent colic lead to euthanasia. During observation in the necropsy 80% of the small intestine has thickened walls, a sample was collected and sent to histopathologic analysis that revealed the lymphoplasmocytic enteritis diagnosis.
