Abstract(s)
Liver dysfunction comprises a range of pathologies capable of damaging and altering normal liver function, including liver cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (steatosis), among others. Since there is a compromised immune system and increased susceptibility of the individual, it has been found that patients with liver dysfunction have an altered periodontal health status. Periodontitis is considered a chronic infection-inflammatory disease that causes the destruction of tooth support structures and it is one of the most prevalent pathologies in the adult population with high oral and systemic health repercussions.Scientific studies suggest the participation of periodontal disease in the progression of hepatic pathologies, referring to the association of certain mechanisms, mainly bacteria, pro-inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress, these being the possible responsible for the role of periodontitis in hepatic diseases. In fact, factors such as the inflammatory nature of both pathologies, psychological factors associated with liver patients, accompanied by poor oral hygiene, increased periodontal bacterial growth due to reduced function by the liver in eliminating bacteria and toxic products to the body are also taken into account as possible mechanisms involved in this relationship/association. In short, this monograph aims to analyze the possible relationship between periodontitis and liver dysfunctions.
