Abstract(s)
The production of manipulated drugs is an ancient practice in Portuguese community pharmacies, since it allows obtaining dosages and pharmaceutical forms that are not obtained in the industry. However, the studies performed are scarce and do not allow to determine with certainty which factors influence the practice of manipulation in pharmacies and the professionals' perspective on its pertinence. This study is descriptive and aims to know the current panorama of the production of handled drugs in Portuguese community pharmacies and to identify the future perspectives of pharmacists regarding the production of this type of medicines. Objective: To characterize the current production of handled drugs in Portuguese community pharmacies. Materials and methods: 98 pharmacies were contacted electronically and the information about the study and access to the questionnaire was made available online. The questionnaire was composed of 23 multiple choice questions and 2 short open answer questions, addressing the topic. Results: In the 98 questionnaires 74.5% (73 pharmacies) answered that produce handled drugs and 24.5% (25 pharmacies) do not produce handled drugs. Conclusions: The most widely used dosage forms are solutions and suspensions for oral use, solutions for diagnosis or laboratory use, and semi-solid preparations for local application. The most prescribed medical specialties are dermatology (47.95%), otolaryngology (15.30%), pediatrics (8.16%) and genecology, endocrinology and dietetics and nutrition (1.03%). As for future perspectives on manipulation, 45% of respondents believe it will decrease.
