Abstract(s)
Abstract In the post-II world war period, Portugal finds itself deadlocked about its National Defence Policy, and in this context, is important to understand: “What were the implications of the entry of Portugal to NATO in terms of his National Defence Policy?” Intended it is with this question, to produce a comparison of the National Defence Politic Portuguese State, before and after signing of the North Atlantic Treaty. That situation arises in consequence of the disappearance of the International System known until the II World War. Regarding that, in the context of international relations, particularly between the Western States and the Eastern european States – which culminated in the establishment of two colligations – leads Europe to an unprecedented situation in itshistory, in which its central power moved to USSR, and other european States are too buffeted to respond to that fact. In that way, using a documental analysis, which was reinforced with the execution of semi direct and explorative interviews to three entities with high knowledge and distinct reputation about the thematic – Professors Doctors António José Telo, Nuno Severiano Teixeira and the Coronel (Doctor) Nuno Lemos Pires – it was possible to raise the investigation to an audaciously level, giving greater strength to the conclusions. Therefore, the present investigation aims a qualitative approach based on a methodology hypothetic-deductive and descriptive, methodology, sustained in a study case. In that way, we can epilogue that NATO revealed itself very important to the Portuguese National Defence Policy, in one period which Portugal didn´t have solutions and the most important desideratum to America regarding Portugal integration in the Organisation was an immense importance geostrategic and geopolitics of Azores and the strategic Portuguese triangle, which ending to prove the huge functional power of Portugal.
