Abstract(s)
exceção a Guarda Nacional Republicana. Como tal, torna-se premente desenvolver
algumas estratégias que previnam os seus efeitos.
Abstract Stress has been exerting greater and more serious repercussions inside various institutions, causing significant impact in society. Stress has influence over people’s wellbeing and health and reflects necessarily on one’s personal performance and productivity, diminishing them. This is also the case in the National Republican Guard. This study focuses on the perception of stress experienced by the military in operational activity and its aim is to discover the main sources of stress these individuals are subject to, to envisage measures capable of contributing to reducing stress, and to compare the stress levels found in this profession with data relative to other professions. The present investigation began with the theoretical framework, followed by bibliographical research related to the subject matter of this report, as a means to support the field work, which consisted in the collection of data with an enquiry through questionnaire. The analysis and discussion of the data provided the answers to the starting questions/hypotheses, and enabled some considerations concerning stress. The conclusions suggest that the main sources of stress in the National Republican Guard are not related to specificity of the profession (which involves, for example, dealing with dangerous persons), but, instead, with the personal interests and wellbeing of the military (regarding issues such as insufficient pay, deficient facilities, among other factors). There are simple measures that can be taken to diminish the perception of stress of the military and one of the most viable is the intensification, improvement and consolidation of training. Organizations are a potential locus of stressful events, and the National Republican Guard is no exception. It is therefore urgent to develop strategies to prevent their effects.
