Abstract(s)
Adicionalmente, pretende identificar as
a socialização.
This research aims to study Heavy Metal festivals as potential dark tourism products in Portugal, through the attendees’ motivations, behaviors, and tourism practices. It also aims to boost the investment in these festivals across the country, by demonstrating their impacts on local communities. Additionally, it seeks to identify the characteristics inherent to the participants in these events, as well as their experience, placing it in the dark tourism spectrum. The methodology used in this investigation is based on semi-structured interviews, with Heavy Metal festivals’ participants and Heavy Metal bands’ artists. The interviews sought to access their motivations and emotions, associated with the festival experience, as well as the behaviors they observe and carry out at the festivals, and identify the touristic products and services consumed during the experience. It was possible to conclude that the main motivation to participate in Heavy Metal festivals is music, followed by socialization. Nevertheless, there’s a huge emotional component associated to these events, which is essential for the maximum enjoyment of the experience. The participants seek for increasingly authentic and intense feelings, while artists work to provide increasingly memorable experiences. It is possible to place the Heavy Metal festivals in the dark tourism spectrum, as Lightest experiences, or even Lighter, if extreme metal festivals are considered. The local communities have been benefiting more and more from these events, understanding that the violence that was practiced out of the festivals, some decades ago, nowadays is externalized at the event, in a controlled way, as a mechanism for channeling emotions. The Heavy Metal festivals are a growing potential tourism niche that deserves a greater investment from the destinations. This project has contributed to increase the attractiveness of Heavy Metal festivals, as tools for tourism promotion and economic and cultural development of the local communities. It also sought to present forms of innovation and diversification of the specialized tourism experiences focused on the Heavy Metal festivals niche.
