Pain perception is a complex sensory experience. Experimental studies demonstrated that pain perception might be influenced by a set of related factors, such as emotions, stress, anxiety, environmental control and previous experiences. Studies also correlated pain with surgical factors, namely surgery type and duration, as well as operator experience. Surgery complexity has also been subject to considerable growth, as new instruments, materials, and therapeutic concepts are developed. Pain perception following implant placement surgery is still not fully established. It is extremely important to correctly comprehend the intensity of pain and the variables that affect it, for they are expressed as an emotional response, which will influence not only the planning and choice of therapeutic by the clinician, but also the acceptance of these by the patient. By informing the patient of the pain intensity that follows surgery, as well as factors that might influence these, the clinician will develop realistic expectations about the surgical procedures which the patient will be submitted to, thus accomplishing a better doctor-patient relationship. Our aim is to conduct a narrative review of pain perception after implant placement surgery. Qualitative research was carried out using scientific search engines PubMed, Cochrane and B-on, covering scientific publications from the last 10 years. We concluded that pain experienced after implant placement surgery was tendentially a low intensity, acute pain with moderate inflammation.
