Abstract(s)
Background: Positive Mental Health is defined as the mental health of healthy people, with the intention of optimising their well-being. Admission to higher education is an important milestone in any student's life and involves a series of transitions and adaptations, accompanied by challenges and demands that can affect well-being and academic performance. In addition to adapting to higher education, nursing students face even more challenges associated with the genesis of the course, such as clinical practice in real learning contexts. The following study was therefore undertaken. Aim: To assess the association between Positive Mental Health (PMH) and Academic Perceptions - Expectations (AP-Exp) among undergraduate nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study with a non-probabilistic accidental sample of 127 Nursing students from a Portuguese Higher Education Institution. The data was collected between April and May 2024 through an online questionnaire: sociodemographic and clinical data, Questionnaire PMH (α=0.930) and PA-Exp Questionnaire (α=0,950). The data was processed and analysed using SPSS® version 29 software, using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study obtained approval from the Ethics Committee. Results: The sample was predominantly female, 77.20%, aged between 18 and 23 (71.65%), and 75.6% enrolled in their 1st choice of degree /institution. Around 22.80 per cent of the students had already received a mental health diagnosis, and 43.30 per cent had been counselled. The students had high levels of global PMH (121.14+16.77) and statistically significant differences (p≤0.05) in the variables: year of degree, displaced from home, professional counselling and substance use. The participants had an overall average of 36.00+4.53 on the PA-Exp Questionnaire, with statistically significant differences (p≤0.05) in the variables: age and 1st choice placement. There was a weak, statistically significant positive correlation between the overall totals of the MH+ Questionnaire and the PA-Exp Questionnaire (rho=0.197; p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: Nursing students with higher levels of PMS tend to have more positive PA-Exp. The results indicate the need for interventions focussed both on promoting PMH and on the PA-Exp of nursing students.
