O Jornal Encyclopedico [1779; 1788-1793; 1806], cuja patrona foi a rainha D. Maria I [1734-1816], teve como principal leitmotiv as causas da instrução e divulgação das Ciências e Artes. Terá sido a primeira das publicações periódicas portuguesas ditas “enciclopedis-tas”, as quais surgiram por influência da Encyclopédie [1751-1772], orientada por Denis Diderot [1713-1784] e Jean le Rond d’Alembert [1717-1783], entre outros. Este periódico começou a publicar-se em Lisboa, sob a direcção de Félix António Castrioto [?-1798] e contou com a chancela do privilégio real. É, fundamentalmente, um marco crucial da imprensa periódica portuguesa na viragem do século XVIII para o século XIX.

Have been the first of the portuguese periodicals said “enciclopedistas”, which appeared under the influence of the Encyclopédie [1751-1772], directed by Denis Diderot [1713-1784] and Jean le Rond d’Alembert [1717-1783], among others. This journal began to publish in Lisbon, under the direction of António Félix Castrioto [?-1798] and featured the royal privilege’s seal. It is fundamentally a crucial milestone in the portuguese periodical press at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century.
