Abstract(s)
The present study, conducted as part of the master’s in Clinical and Health Psychology at Universidade Europeia, aimed to investigate the relationship between childhood trauma and quality of life associated to subjective symptoms of intestinal inflammation. Specifically, the study seeks to analyse the mediating role of psychological variables such as emotional suppression and cognitive control. A quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional research design was adopted. The sample consists of 402 participants from the Portuguese population, who responded to a set of online questionnaires. The instruments used include the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and the Cognitive Control and Flexibility Questionnaire. To test the direct effect of childhood trauma and the indirect effects of emotional suppression and cognitive control on the quality of life associated with subjective symptoms of inflammation, a parallel mediation analysis with 2 mediators was conducted, with bootstrapped confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the significance of the indirect effects. This analysis was conducted using the PROCESS macro (model 4, parallel mediation) for SPSS. This study may contribute to a better understanding of the psychosocial mechanisms involved in the link between early trauma and the quality of life in individuals with subjective symptoms of intestinal inflammation. These findings may have relevant implications for clinical practice and for the development of targeted intervention strategies aimed at improving the mental and physical health of adults with a history of childhood adversity.
