Abstract(s)
Abstract This Applied Investigation Work entitled “The Air Defence Artillery in the Air Defence of Lisbon during the World War II: A comparative study with London’s Air Defence System” has the main goal to present a brief study of the first integrated system of the Air Defence in Portugal, acquired from England. Because this system was never employed exception drills, in order to assess its effectiveness and functioning we resort to a comparison with the same system which was used in London‟s defence. This work approaches the process of implementing the AirDefence System in the city of Lisbon during World War II, which was equipped with the weapons as command and control systems acquired from England by doing a comparative study with the London Air Defence System in the same time frame. The work was made in the Military Academy Headquarters in Lisbon, based on primary information existing in Lisbon‟s Military Historic Archive and London‟s National Archives, and in secondary sources found in libraries such as the National Library, Army‟s Library, Military Academy‟s Library and in the 1st Air Defence Artillery Regiment‟s Library. The methodology used started by analysing articles, scientific newsletters, books, master‟s degrees studies, and documents from the Military Historic Archives and the 1st Air Defence Artillery Regiment. We aimed to answer the starting and related questi ons by phasing the investigation: 1st Stage – based on the reference literature we did a brief theoretical framework about the history of Air Defence Artillery; 2nd Stage – based on reference literature, and with the consummation of the first stage, by analysing the development factors that lead to the acquirement of the Air Defence system of Lisbon; 3rd Stage – based on the analysis of the bibliographic contents, we identified the documents and archives that better suited the study. With this study we concluded that the Air Defence System of Lisbon was similar to the one in London, from the weapon system to the alert system and target acquisition with the exception of the Radar that didn‟t exist in Portugal.
