Abstract(s)
This final report focuses on the importance of teaching Sign Name (SN) to hearing people as an element of identity and culture for the Deaf Community. Based on a theoretical-practical approach, a case study was developed in a high school class composed of deaf and hearing students, seeking to analyse the impact of teaching SN on promoting inclusion, empathy and respect for linguistic and cultural diversity. This research assumes that learning SN contributes to the recognition of deafness not as a disability, but as a manifestation of a rich and autonomous visual culture. Through sessions that combine theoretical content with practical activities, the aim was not only to transmit knowledge, but also to promote an experience that would involve students in valuing differences. The results obtained reveal a significant change in the perceptions of hearing people, reflecting an increase in critical awareness, interest and respect for the Deaf Community. The use of SN proved to be a powerful tool for cultural and communicational mediation, allowing hearing people to genuinely approach Deaf Identity. Qualitative analysis of the responses collected highlighted the emotional, social and educational impact of the experience, reinforcing the importance of integrating this content into school curriculum. It can therefore be concluded that the integration of SN into the educational context promotes recognition of Portuguese Sign Language and Deaf Culture. By positioning SN as a tool for inclusion and for building bridges between different linguistic and cultural worlds, this research contributes to the development of a more inclusive education
