favorecer a compreensão do parto, prevenir sofrimento psicológico e apoiar a adaptação à
maternidade.
Integrated into the Master’s in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing, this report describes the activities carried out during the curricular internship at a perinatal support hospital on the island of Madeira, conducted from September 2024 to May 2025. The practical experience gained during the internship enabled the provision of specialized care to women and couples at various stages of the reproductive process, including labor, delivery, and the postpartum period, as well as in cases of complicated pregnancy. Additionally, it allowed support for adaptation to pregnancy and the transition to parenthood, promoting the consolidation of essential competencies for specialized practice in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing. This report presents and interprets the experiences acquired during the internship, supporting critical analysis with up-to-date scientific knowledge applicable to clinical practice. The role of the Specialist Nurse in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing consists of supporting women and couples throughout all stages of the reproductive process, from pregnancy to the postpartum period, delivering care grounded in current scientific evidence and responsive to the specific needs of each family context. The postpartum period involves physical, emotional, and social changes that can increase women’s vulnerability to mental health disorders, such as anxiety, postpartum depression, and stress. When not identified early, these conditions may compromise maternal well-being, mother–infant bonding, and family dynamics. In this context, psychological support strategies have been proposed, highlighting debriefing, originally developed in psychology for trauma situations. This intervention consists of a structured dialogue that aids in integrating emotionally intense experiences. In maternal health, it aims to enhance understanding of the birth experience, prevent psychological distress, and support adaptation to motherhood. The growing attention to the emotional impact of childbirth underscores the need to study debriefing as a therapeutic intervention during the postpartum period, promoting humanized and evidence- based mental health practices.
