Abstract(s)
convidados a participar neste estudo.
Introduction: Bruxism has been associated with university students over the past few years. Being a potential risk factor for a disorder of the stomatogmatic system, it is important to identify risk factors / behavior for this condition. Objectives: This study aims to: assess the self-perception of bruxism in students of Dentistry and other Health courses; to assess the prevalence of parafunctional habits, experience of pain and difficulty sleeping. Materials and Methods: 305 students from the Cooperativa de Ensino Superior Egas Moniz were invited to participate in this study. Students of Dental Medicine (n = 153) and other Health courses (n = 152), in a first phase, were asked to sign an informed consent, and finally two questionnaires were applied: a questionnaire on self-perception of bruxism and an anxiety scale. Central tendency measures were applied for the main objective, and for the secondary objectives the Pear-son chi-square test was used, with significance of ρ <0.05. Results: In 85% of the students, there was self-perception of some type of bruxism, and 43% considered having Sleep and Wake Bruxism simultaneously. The most prevalent parafunctional habit was “Chewing gum” (77.9%). Regarding anxiety, 57% had some degree of anxiety. There was a correlation in both populations, between the bruxism group and the parafunctional habit "Pressing the tongue between the teeth" (ρ <0.05), and between the bruxism group and the "chronic pain" variable (ρ <0.05). Conclusion: Students have self-perception of bruxism, however there were no significant differences in self-perception of bruxism between the two groups of students, and those with bruxism have at least 1 parafunctional habit.
