Abstract(s)
Abstract: Schizophrenia is a chronic and complex disease, and its worldwide prevalence is of 1%. This alteration of mental health state sports a set of symptoms varied and complex which makes it sometimes difficult to understand. The responsibility of daily care to people with an altered mental state, falls on the family / caregivers who, in their vast majority, have no preparation for such, which leads them to feel a swirl of emotions. These feelings lead to an increased rate of emotions expressed, which provokes, in the person with an altered mental state, an increase of stress and thus the possibility of increased relapse and rehospitalisation. The issue of this work focused on identifying the needs of families / carers of people with schizophrenia, with subsequent application of psychoeducational sessions directed at the elements of the sample. In this paper, of an exploratory-descriptive character, we used quantitative and qualitative methods, we used the interview and questionnaireâ QuestionĂĄrio de Problemas Familiares â Xavier et al. (1997). For data collection we examined the elements of the sample, which consisted of eight family members / caregivers of persons with schizophrenia enrolled in a Community Intervention Unit and Unit Health Care Custom, corresponding, on the southern shore of the Tejo river. Through this work we focus on promoting the development of skills of these families / caregivers in dealing with their family member through five psychoeducational sessions, in which were discussed the issues related to the needs presented by the elements of the sample. For the evaluation of these sessions the family / caregivers showed that they were more informed about their needs. Now they are more receptive to the transmission of information as a way of learning and, consequently, greater training in caring for their family member. There was also reference to the importance of knowing the reference professionals (social worker), as a means of interconnection between the care providers and family members / caregivers.
