Introduction: Oral health professionals hold a privileged role in the early detection of child abuse and neglect due to their regular contact with children and the frequent visibility of orofacial and behavioral signs. However, despite this strategic position, such cases remain largely underreported, which limits effective child protection and the intervention of competent authorities. Objectives: Assess the knowledge of oral health professionals in Portugal regarding the topic of child abuse and neglect. Materials and methods: Through the application of an online questionnaire, a cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was conducted using a mixed-methods research approach. Between February and May 2025, 167 responses were collected from dentists, stomatologists, and dental hygienists across different regions of the country. The analysis focused on characterizing the level of knowledge, perceptions, and clinical practices related to the detection and reporting of child abuse cases. Results: The study involved 167 professionals, and findings revealed a low detection rate of suspected child abuse and neglect, with an even lower reporting rate following suspicion. Most participants expressed a need for further training on the subject. Conclusions: This study confirms the presence of significant gaps in knowledge among oral health professionals in Portugal regarding child abuse. It is therefore essential to reinforce education programs and to implement standardized protocols in order to strengthen professional confidence and ensure the protection and well-being of children.
