periodontopatogénicas, predominantemente gram-negativas, e o sistema imunitário do
Google Scholar e Cochrane, inserindo as seguintes palavras-chave: Halitose, Periodontite, Tratamento Periodontal.
Periodontitis is a chronic disease, of high prevalence worldwide, characterized by the progressive destruction of the periodontium. The interaction between the predominantly gram-negative periodontopathogenic bacteria and the host immune system is the main responsible for the development of periodontitis. Besides compromising the functional and aesthetic capacity of the patient, this pathology is one of the main etiological factors of halitosis, since it increases the concentration of bacteria present in the oral cavity. Halitosis is a term used for the designation of bad breath. It is a multifactorial etiology condition, with a predominantly intraoral origin. In more serious cases, this condition can negatively influence social relations. The bacterial metabolization of amino acids results in the formation and release of volatile sulphurous compounds (VSC), the mainly responsible for halitosis. The treatment requires a precise diagnosis, in which the intra and extraoral evaluation, clinical history and habits of the patient must be taken into consideration in order to adapt the treatment to the cause of halitosis diagnosed. The periodontal treatment aims at the elimination of periodontopathogenic bacteria. As these are the main responsible for the development of halitosis, periodontal treatment can be considered an effective method in reducing and eliminating halitosis in patients with periodontitis. The following dissertation was carried out in order to verify the effect of periodontal treatment on halitosis. The search was performed in PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane databases, entering the following keywords: Halitosis, Periodontitis, Periodontal Treatment.
