Abstract(s)
Throughout Contemporary History, the Nordic countries have demonstrated their avant-garde character regarding women's rights, which have been conquered thanks to the struggle of Scandinavian women, whose contributions are an example to the European community. The present study aims to highlight and acknowledge the work carried out by professional women in design culture, who have enhanced their status and contributed to the so-named 'Scandinavian style', from the 20th century to the present day. In order to contribute to the visibility of these professionals, an analysis of the social and historical evolution was carried out and the main achievements of the Nordic women architects and designers were highlighted. For the consolidation of knowledge, a database was developed that presents and aggregates the work of reference women for Scandinavian Design, supported also by personal interviews to a group of 10 Nordic professionals, in response to a questionnaire developed to investigate the position of these professionals towards the gender gap issue. Through this survey, in which the cataloguing of authorial works and the collected answers (for the cases in which they were directly responded and validated) are crossed, a first approach on the parallelism of this Nordic reality in confrontation with the Portuguese was produced, which contributed to a small sample of national reference designers, as an instrument to be used as a base for future researches.
