Dado que o ser humano habita o meio terrestre é neste ambiente que, maioritariamente,
as operações militares conduzem a resultados decisivos ao nível político, pelo que a análise da
aplicação das forças terrestres torna-se incontornável no âmbito do emprego do Instrumento
Militar e da Estratégia Total do Estado. Tendo como elemento central desteestudo a evolução
do empregodas forças terrestres desde o final da 2ª Guerra Mundial, o presente texto centrase
na aplicação de forças terrestres por parte dos Estados Unidos, um dos herdeiros da Escola
Continental, e uma das mais importantes referências para os restantes Instrumentos Militares.
O estudo apresentado centra-se em duas dimensões, o emprego da força, onde é analisado
o balanceamento entre fogo e manobra, e a doutrina, onde se abordam os níveis da guerra e
o tipo de abordagem às operações.
