Abstract(s)
Nowadays, appearance is considered very important for the construction of young people's identity and self-confidence. Various physical attributes are valued, but the smile seems to be essential for self-expression and self-esteem. Studies indicate that a beautiful smile has the power to boost self-confidence and social interaction, which are important factors at a stage when acceptance is sought among peers (Bersezio et al.,2018 ; Stojilković et al.,2024 ; Zaugg et al.,2022). In modern society, it is necessary to take into account the influence that social networks can have on the perception of the smile, which can be both beneficial and unfavorable (Karkun et al.,2023). All of this represents a new challenge for future dentists, who must not only develop skills in the aesthetic field, but also understand and manage their patients' expectations (Goldstein et al.,2018 ; Rattan et al., 2023). Objective: this study aims to analyze young people's perspectives on their smile appearance in order to provide information on the skills that future dentists need to develop in order to serve young people effectively and responsibly. The narrative review will be based on the search and consultation of scientific articles published on the digital platforms Pubmed, Trip Database, B-on, Google Scholar between 2017 and 2025. Conclusion: Preparing professional dentists beyond technique is essential in a world where smiles have a profound impact on young peoples’s lives. Ethics, empathy and multidisciplinary vision must guide this profession.
